Camp Assistant Director

This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Camp Assistant Director supports the Camp Director in the day-to-day leadership of seasonal camp operations, including seasonal hiring support, staff training and scheduling, camper and family experience, and consistent risk management and safety practices. The Camp Assistant Director helps maintain a positive, inclusive, and well-organized camp environment aligned with YMCA policies and standards. Essentials Functions: Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all relationships with campers, families, staff, volunteers, and community partners. Supports implementation of daily camp operations, including schedules, unit coverage, transitions, and activity flow to ensure a consistently safe, engaging camper experience. Assists with seasonal staffing processes, including supporting recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, timekeeping/payroll readiness, and staff communication. Helps lead staff training and ongoing coaching, including reinforcing expectations for supervision, behavior guidance, customer service, and professionalism; escalates performance concerns to the Camp Director as needed. Ensures consistent risk management practices and adherence to YMCA policies, including youth safety requirements, emergency procedures, and the Rule of Three. Maintains an active on-site presence: monitors camper supervision, supports staff in real time, and responds calmly and quickly to incidents, parent concerns, or operational changes. Supports camper and family communication, including responding to routine questions and concerns in a timely, professional manner and partnering with the Camp Director on escalations. Assists with required documentation and compliance processes, including attendance, rosters, incident/accident reports, medication/allergy protocols (as applicable), and other camp records per licensing/health department/YMCA requirements. Supports camp facility readiness and coordination of basic upkeep needs, including communicating issues, supporting set-up/clean-up routines, and ensuring spaces meet safety and program standards. Participates in required meetings and trainings and completes assigned professional development that supports camp quality, supervision, and YMCA standards. Requirements: Must be at least 21 years old. 1+ year experience in a camp leadership role (e.g., Senior Counselor, Unit Director, Specialty Director) or comparable youth program supervision. Post-high school education in a related field preferred. Demonstrated ability to organize daily operations (schedules, transitions, coverage) and support quality programming. Proven ability to supervise, coach, and hold seasonal staff accountable with professionalism and consistency. Strong communication and customer service skills with children, families, and staff; able to de-escalate concerns calmly. Current CPR/AED, First Aid, and O2 Administration required (or ability to obtain within the Association's required timeframe).
