Position Summary: The Aquatics Director is responsible for the strategic oversight, daily operations, and overall performance of the Aquatics Department at the Hockessin Athletic Club (HAC). This includes managing all aquatic programming such as Aqua Fitness, American Red Cross certifications, HAC Swim Academy, USMS, and ISR swim lessons and ensuring excellence in customer service, safety, staffing, and budgeting. The Aquatics Director leads and trains a dynamic team to deliver top-tier aquatic services and experiences, as well as WOW customer service aligned with HAC’s mission and standard operating procedures.

Key Responsibilities: Operations Management

Work in collaboration with Pool & Grounds staff to maintain a safe aquatics environment.

Oversee the day-to-day operation of the aquatics facility including pools, staff, and programs.

Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal safety and health regulations.

Coordinate pool schedules, lane usage, maintenance, and special events.

Program Development & Oversight

Plan, implement, and evaluate a diverse range of aquatic programs including group and private youth swim lessons, adult swim lessons, ISR, USMS, aqua fitness classes, and American Red Cross programs

Ensure programs meet Red Cross and industry standards for quality and safety.

Monitor participation trends and adjust offerings to meet member and community needs.

Team Leadership & Staff Development

Oversees job responsibilities for the Assistant Aquatics Director and Aquatics Office Manager.

Recruit, train, and supervise aquatics staff including lifeguards, swim instructors, aqua fitness instructors, and Red Cross trainers.

Schedule staff to ensure proper coverage and quality instruction.

Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development opportunities.

Safety & Compliance

Collaborate with the Assistant Aquatics Director as HAC’s American Red Cross liaison, ensuring staff certifications are current and in compliance.

Enforce safety standards and emergency procedures; respond to incidents as needed.

Collaborate with the Assistant Aquatics Director to organize and conduct lifeguard in-service training and emergency drills.

Conduct swim instructor in-service training to review skills and teach new methods

Budgeting & Financial Management

Develop and manage the Aquatics department’s annual budget, covering Aqua Fitness, Lifeguards, Swim Lessons, ISR, American Red Cross programs, and G&A

Monitor revenue and expenses to meet financial goals.

Oversee payroll, purchasing, and inventory control for aquatics supplies and equipment.

Qualifications: Required:

Bachelor’s degree.

Minimum 3 years of leadership experience.

Demonstrated experience in program development, staff management, and budget oversight.

Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred:

Swim Team background with 5+ years of instructor experience.

Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or equivalent (or able to obtain within 6 months).

Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross).

American Red Cross Instructor or Instructor Trainer certifications.

Proficiency with scheduling and registration software (e.g., Datatrak & Paycor).

Work Environment:

Fast-paced fitness and recreation facility environment.

May involve extended hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Regular exposure to heat, humidity and pool chemicals.

Demands of the position: 40% Sitting; 40% Standing; 15% Walking; 5% Lifting.
