
Cardiology Coding Specialist

Overview
The Cardiology Coding Specialist serves as a key resource within The Cardiac & Vascular Institute (TCAVI), responsible for ensuring accurate, compliant, and optimized coding practices across cardiology and vascular services.
Hours of Work: M-F Employment Type: Full Time Shift: Day
This role is highly focused on Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) and physician education, partnering closely with providers, clinical teams, and revenue cycle departments to improve documentation accuracy, coding specificity, and overall reimbursement performance. The Cardiology Coding Specialist will support TCAVI’s strategic initiatives related to HCC/RAF capture, MIPS quality performance, and revenue cycle optimization, while maintaining strict compliance with regulatory and payer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes across inpatient, outpatient, and procedural services while ensuring compliance with CMS and payer guidelines.
Perform detailed chart reviews to validate documentation, identify discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions.
Conduct concurrent and retrospective reviews to improve documentation accuracy and specificity; issue provider queries as needed.
Collaborate with leadership to enhance documentation practices and monitor CDI metrics and trends.
Educate physicians and clinical staff on documentation best practices, coding updates, and cardiology-specific requirements through training, materials, and one-on-one coaching.
Serve as a liaison between providers and revenue cycle teams.
Perform internal coding audits, support external audits, and implement improvement plans based on findings.
Support MIPS, HCC/RAF, and other quality initiatives through accurate coding and documentation.
Partner with billing, revenue cycle, and clinical teams to resolve coding issues, prevent denials, and stay current on coding and regulatory updates.
Qualifications
Certified Cardiology Coder (CCC) or 5+ years of cardiology coding experience
Experience across inpatient, outpatient, and facility coding settings
Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) experience in a physician practice or hospital setting
Knowledge of HCC/RAF, MIPS, and value-based care models
Skills & Competencies
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Excellent communication and provider-facing education skills
Ability to interpret clinical documentation and translate into accurate coding
Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
