About the Role
The Department seeks a Director of Public Relations to serve in the Programs and Communication Division. The Director will manage a variety of public engagement activities, including developing and distributing press releases, overseeing the news section of the MDAH website, and supervising the Public Information Officer. They will respond promptly to media inquiries, coordinate with division directors to prepare accurate media statements, build strong relationships with local reporters, and monitor media coverage involving MDAH. The Director will also coordinate requests for filming and photography across MDAH sites, collaborate with the webmaster to keep web content current and engaging, prepare staff for media interviews, develop public communications through Constant Contact, and represent MDAH at relevant conferences and events. The Director will supervise the Public Information Officer by overseeing the production of the Weekly Update and other Constant Contact communications, advising distribution of information requests, and reviewing event calendar content.
What You'll Need to Be Successful
Strong leadership, exceptional writing and editing skills, proficiency in AP style, and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Teams. Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, communicate effectively, build relationships, maintain organization, detail orientation, and adaptability in a fast‑paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 1–2 years of experience with a preference for 3+ years in public relations or marketing. Experience with media monitoring tools such as Meltwater and Constant Contact is preferred, along with prior experience in a public relations managerial position.
