Overview
The Senior Assistant Director Marketing Communications is responsible for working with Marketing, Recruitment, Operations and Visitor Center teams within Undergraduate Admissions; marketing areas within Enrollment Management; and marketing areas outside of Enrollment Management (e.g. academic departments, housing, etc.) to deploy the marketing and creative strategy in a manner that engages, nurtures and converts prospective students (and their families) into applicants and committed students. This position contributes to the development of digital and print content that directly impacts the success of the university’s undergraduate recruiting and admissions efforts. The position directly supervises marketing interns who support the office’s marketing and special events outreach.
Responsibilities
Work closely with the Creative Director to build a creative strategy for each audience and stage in the recruitment cycle based on industry intel and data analytics.
Collectively set the creative concept for each deliverable including design elements, content strategy, etc.
Write, edit, proof all marketing materials and campaigns disseminated by Undergraduate Admissions, and materials and campaigns for assigned clients within enrollment management, academic departments, student services and external partners.
Ensure deliverables across all areas are cohesive in voice and style and maintain branding standards.
Cultivate and maintain strong client/stakeholder relationships with assigned clients within Undergraduate Admissions, Enrollment Management, campus units and external partners.
Lead regular strategy meetings to assess campaign performance across digital and print channels, synthesize research and analytics to inform data‑driven recommendations, and develop comprehensive communications plans aligned with enrollment goals.
Conduct primary and secondary research to inform strategic messaging and campaign development.
Hire, train and directly supervise assigned marketing interns, apply appropriate management principles, communicate expectations and provide feedback.
Selectively review applications for admissions and scholarships, travel and represent USC at recruiting and outreach programs, participate in on‑campus recruiting events and training.
Qualifications
Minimum Required Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a job‑related field and 4 or more years of job‑related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job‑related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
Required Certification: Valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in writing creative content for print and digital marketing material and knowledge of marketing and advertising principles.
Prior higher education marketing experience, particularly within undergraduate admissions.
Supervisory experience or experience mentoring/coaching others.
Familiarity with AP style and design and experience using full suite of Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft products.
Demonstrated success and proficiency for various forms of social networking sites, media and other means of online communication.
Experience with CRM, particularly Slate.
Experience executing print/static media, video production digital media, and events.
Demonstrated confidence in decision making to deliver excellent customer service while mitigating risks.
Independent, analytic thinker who collaborates well within team and cross‑functional environment.
Must be organized and detail oriented with ability to apply quality control practices to all processes.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills at all levels of management and keen grasp of the English language.
Creative and innovative thinker and planner and confident in producing work across multiple platforms.
Understanding of marketing and advertising trends in and outside of higher education.
Knowledge of marketing strategies and tactics and familiarity with digital tactics such as keyword placement, SEO, email marketing and web analytics.
Experience aligning multiple brand strategies and ideas as well as handling multiple projects by prioritizing and managing time effectively.
Ability to consistently meet tight deadlines.
Self‑motivated and self‑directed and ability to work independently or as an active member of a team.
Excellent customer relations skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers.
Understanding of print and graphic design terminology as well as photojournalism.
Must be knowledgeable of admissions policies and procedures and be familiar with national issues and trends in higher education.
Must have the ability to maintain confidential information.
Must be able to read and evaluate academic credentials.
