The New York Times is continuing to expand its video journalism, identifying compelling visual stories across the depth and breadth of our report. We showcase the expertise of Times journalists on-camera, share urgent news updates, produce on-the-ground reporting, pioneering Visual Investigations, and video podcasts.

The New York Times is looking for a temporary Video Journalist who can bring our audio portfolio to mobile, social, and digital audiences. Your responsibilities will include story planning, production assistance and publishing full-length video podcast episodes on individual shows as well as clips for a range of shows including Cannonball with Wesley Morris, The Interview, Popcast and other shows.

You have experience in all aspects and stages of video production, bringing strong organizational and communication skills to the process. You should have a well-developed news sense and thoughtful story-framing skills. You'll collaborate on research, scripting, post-production, and publishing.

Solid camera skills, including lighting techniques in multi-camera environments, remote settings, and video editing abilities are all assets. You will work under the guidance of a Senior Producer on the Podcast Video team.

You will work with reporters, editors, the audio team, and external collaborators to establish and execute on a vision for podcast video work that enhances our report. This role is for someone with a strong grasp of podcast video and social video trends and who takes an innovative and adaptive approach to video formats and techniques.

This is a temporary (12 months) in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce Newsroom podcast videos in horizontal and vertical formats
  • Collaborate with the newsroom audience, social, and video teams to ensure smooth production timelines and delivery, including pitching videos to our social team and writing captions
  • Pitch and develop different forms of short-form vertical video storytelling that are journalistically powerful and visually transformative
  • Can handle the pressure of newsroom deadlines and juggle multiple projects at any given time
  • Must be open to experimenting with new ideas
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of multimedia storytelling, video editing, and production experience in video news journalism
  • Excellent news judgment and ability to work with colleagues and reporters to synthesize news gathering and investigations into informative and engaging podcast video
  • Experience creating original news videos that incorporate audio, video, still images, graphics, and text
  • Ability to edit video with Adobe Premiere
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Cinematography experience
  • Experience working in video podcasts
  • Experience working with social videos and social media platforms
  • Interest in news, politics, and pop culture
  • The ability to make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule

The annual base pay range for this role is between: $113,270.67 - $136,000 USD

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
