Position Description Reporting to the Director of the MBE, the Associate Director of the Remote Master of Science in Bioethics (MBE) program provides the day‑to‑day academic leadership for the faculty, staff, and students involved in the in‑person MBE program. The Associate Director will also serve as course director for one of the two core courses of the MBE (either Foundations of Bioethics or the Capstone Experience). As faculty in the Center, the Associate Director of the In‑Person MBE is expected to participate in the life of the Center for Bioethics, attending Center events, and including Center affiliation in publications, reports, and presentations.
Curricular and Administrative Elements
Provide day‑to‑day academic program oversight by supporting and communicating with program staff, course instructors, teaching assistants, and students, monitoring academic processes
Develop and maintain program engagement opportunities for in‑person students, in collaboration with the education team
Supervise TAs, TFs, and temporary course instructors
Course Director Duties Serve as course director for the Foundations of Bioethics sequence and/or Capstone Experience, including the Capstone seminar.
Strategic Oversight and Recruitment
Travel to events and conferences to promote the MBE program nationally and internationally
Communicate with prospective students to recruit them
Collaborate with the Director on annual updates of admissions materials, applications, and admissions rubric
Provide training for program admissions committee members
Participate as a reviewer for application materials, provide ratings, and hold interviews with prospective students
Academic and Student Advising
Participate in capstone mentor matching
Oversee letters of recommendation for remote students and alumni of the program in conjunction with the Director
Advise remote students on career and professional development opportunities
Work with remote students to maintain satisfactory academic progress and identify and mobilize new sources of support as needed
Academic Policy and Oversight
Work with the Office of Graduate Education to customize plans for remote students with academic, disciplinary, or other special circumstances
Define and evolve programmatic policies and academic expectations in collaboration with the Director
Participate in and execute the external review process, at the Director’s direction
Attend the Academic Progress and Review Board (APRB) meetings to discuss academic progress and decide on necessary remediation or disciplinary procedures for at‑risk students across the master’s programs
Attend the Master’s Governance to contribute to academic and administrative policy development, share best practices, and collaborate to design resources across master’s programs, at the Director’s discretion
Business Accountability Maintain accountability to the annual business plan and budget in collaboration with the Director, Associate Director for Education, and Associate Director of Finance and Operations.
Basic Qualifications
Doctoral degree required
Commitment to and aptitude in bioethics education as demonstrated through teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and/or service/practice
Additional Qualifications
Advanced degree in Bioethics or related field preferred
3–5 years of teaching experience preferred
Dedicated commitment to supporting and nurturing the career development of learners from diverse backgrounds
Demonstrated leadership skills and operational excellence in a bioethics‑related field or program
Experience with student and program assessment, faculty development, and continuous educational quality improvement
