About PromiseStories | Creative Storytelling:
PromiseStories is MAP’s storytelling ecosystem spanning books, comics, animation, podcasts, and digital media. The division develops original narratives that elevate youth voice, explore identity, and transform lived experience into meaningful creative work.
Role Overview:
We are seeking a Comic Book Writer to develop original comic narratives that reflect MAP’s mission and engage young readers through visual storytelling. This role focuses on crafting compelling scripts, characters, and story arcs that can be translated into illustrated and animated formats. The ideal candidate understands how to write for sequential art and enjoys collaborating closely with illustrators and creative teams.
Key Responsibilities
Write comic scripts, including dialogue, panel descriptions, and scene direction
Develop original characters, story arcs, and narrative concepts
Collaborate with illustrators and artists to bring stories to life visually
Contribute to storyboarding and narrative pacing
Adapt stories for multiple formats (print, digital, animation) when needed
Ensure stories are age-appropriate, culturally responsive, and dignity-centered
Participate in creative brainstorming and editorial sessions
Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace
Qualifications Required
Strong storytelling and writing skills
Understanding of comic book or graphic novel scripting
Ability to write visually and think in sequences and panels
Strong collaboration skills with creative teams
Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values
Preferred
Experience writing comics, graphic novels, or visual scripts
Portfolio or writing samples demonstrating narrative work
Interest in youth storytelling, identity, and social impact themes
Experience working with illustrators or animation teams
Commitment
Volunteer role
Approximately 5–10 hours per week
Minimum 6‑month commitment preferred
Fully remote with optional NYC-based collaboration
