
Director of Finance

Our client is a dynamic, mission‑driven nonprofit organization serving the Chicagoland community. The organization is at an exciting stage of growth and is seeking a strategic and hands‑on Director of Finance to help stabilize and strengthen the accounting and finance function while supporting long‑term sustainability. This role will play a critical leadership position in shaping financial strategy, improving processes, and partnering closely with executive leadership to support the organization’s mission.
Details Position Type: Temp to Hire
Rate: $55-$60/hr. perm salary $120k-$150k depending on experience
Location: Chicago (northside)
Worksite Type: Fully onsite during the training period, transitioning to a hybrid schedule (3 days onsite)
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and compile monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, reports, and organizational budgets
Lead the organization’s long‑term financial strategy, planning, and forecasting initiatives
Prepare for and support annual audits; serve as the primary liaison with external auditors
Manage cash flow, financial modeling, and forecasting to support organizational growth and program expansion
Advise executive leadership and key stakeholders on financial performance, risk management, and fiscal sustainability
Oversee all grant accounting, including tracking, reporting, and compliance with funder requirements
Ensure strong internal controls, financial policies, and nonprofit accounting best practices are in place and followed
Partner with executive leadership to support mission‑driven decision‑making and operational planning
Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and workflows across the finance and accounting team
Provide leadership and mentorship to accounting staff as the team continues to stabilize and evolve
Qualifications
Five plus years of financial management experience within a nonprofit organization
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required
Strong background in grant accounting (required)
Proven experience leading financial operations, budgeting, audits, and reporting
Ability to think strategically while remaining hands‑on in day‑to‑day financial management
Comfortable advising senior leadership on financial performance, risk, and long‑term planning
Prior experience in a director‑level or senior finance role is strongly preferred
Strong communication skills with the ability to partner across departments and leadership levels
