About Us The Reason Outdoors is a veteran-founded nonprofit based in Wilmington, NC, dedicated to supporting the mental and emotional wellbeing of veterans, first responders, and their families through ecotherapy-based outdoor programs. Through hunting, fishing, and time in the wild, we help participants reconnect with themselves, each other, and the healing power of nature. Our organization was founded by Global War on Terror (GWOT) veterans, and demand for our programs continues to grow.
The Opportunity We’re looking for a skilled freelance Grant Writer to help us secure the funding needed to expand our mission. This is a contract role ideal for someone who’s passionate about veteran and first responder causes and has a proven track record of winning grants for nonprofit organizations.
What You’ll Do
Research and identify federal, state, foundation, and corporate grant opportunities aligned with our mission in veteran/first responder wellness, ecotherapy, and outdoor recreation
Write and submit compelling, well-organized grant proposals and letters of inquiry
Develop budgets and supporting narratives in collaboration with our leadership team
Track application deadlines and maintain a grant calendar
Tailor proposals to each funder’s priorities and guidelines
What We’re Looking For
Demonstrated experience writing successful grant proposals for nonprofit organizations
Strong research skills with the ability to identify relevant funding sources
Excellent written communication — clear, persuasive, and detail-oriented
Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and communicate progress Familiarity with veteran/military, first responder, mental health, or outdoor recreation funding landscapes is a strong plus
Experience with foundations, government grants (state and federal), and corporate giving programs
Bonus Points
Personal connection to or understanding of the veteran and first responder community
Experience with ecotherapy, outdoor recreation, or wellness-focused nonprofits
Knowledge of grant databases such as Grants.gov, Foundation Directory Online, or Candid
Compensation Compensation will be discussed with qualified candidates during the hiring process. We’re open to structuring pay in a way that works for both parties.
