Overview The SALT Income & Franchise Tax Manager will deliver a full range of state and local tax (SALT) services including tax planning, compliance, and consulting for a diverse client portfolio. This role involves managing client engagements, leading teams, and providing strategic tax solutions across multi‑state environments.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and lead multiple SALT client engagements across industries
Provide tax planning, consulting, and compliance services
Oversee state & local income/franchise tax return preparation and review
Conduct tax research and prepare technical memorandums
Draft client communications and audit defense support
Manage multi‑state tax reviews, including:
Income & franchise taxes
Sales & use tax
Payroll and property (ad valorem) taxes
Identify tax‑saving opportunities, credits, and incentives
Serve as a trusted advisor to clients on business and tax strategies
Lead, mentor, and evaluate staff and engagement teams
Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables
Support business development and proposal activities
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver integrated tax solutions
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Accounting (required)
6+ years of progressive SALT tax experience (compliance/consulting)
One of the following certifications: Active CPA
JD with active law license
CMI (Certified Member of Institute for Professionals in Taxation)
Strong experience in multi‑state income & franchise tax
Ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously
Skills
Strong expertise in State & Local Tax (SALT)
Deep knowledge of income & franchise tax, sales & use tax, and multi‑state tax regulations
Experience with tax research and technical documentation
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong project and engagement management skills
Proficiency in tax software and Microsoft Office tools
