Overview On July 1, 2025, Brown University launched The Thomas J. Watson Jr. School of International and Public Affairs. The new school builds on a decade of growth within Brown's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and expands the university’s capacity for research, teaching, and policy outreach on global economic, political, social, and policy challenges.

About the role The Assistant Director leads research and operational functions for the Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance and its partner, the Global Linkages Lab (GLL). Reporting to the Faculty Director, the role supports the Center’s mission to bridge academic research and practical policy solutions in global economics and international finance, elevating its global profile, managing research personnel, and generating editorial outputs.

Major responsibilities

Data Strategy and Research Infrastructure: design and integrate the Rhodes/GLL digital ecosystem, ensuring it can host “big data” and interact with global users at scale; use Stata, R, Python, and SQL to manage data and respond to complex researcher requests; lead the design and maintenance of high‑level web platforms; train macroeconomics students in micro‑data analysis and provide tools for original empirical results.

Operations and Faculty Director Partnership: collaborate on high‑level editorial posts, drafting and editing letters, op‑eds, and policy briefs for global finance ministries and central banks; recruit, interview, and select a global pipeline of pre‑docs, post‑docs, and visiting scholars; serve as mentor/manager for research assistants; manage payments and onboarding for all Center‑affiliated scholars; oversee the Center’s social media strategy; manage the full Rhodes Center budget and Director’s start‑up funds; lead planning of the Annual Rhodes Conference, coordinating international visitors and calendars.

Education and experience

Bachelor’s degree required.

Master’s in Economics, Data Science, or International Affairs preferred.

3–5 years of professional experience in a research‑intensive environment, with a track record of managing large‑scale data projects and academic operations.

Expert‑level coding skills in Stata, R, Python, and SQL, and experience with high‑level web design (UI/UX for data visualization).

Job competences

Deep understanding and demonstrated research experience on international economic issues.

High‑level web design and update skills for data‑intensive platforms.

Ability to manage and interpret “big data” to support academic and policy‑oriented research.

Executive presence to represent the Rhodes Center and Faculty Director to high‑ranking visitors from international financial institutions and government agencies.

Strong financial management and organizational skills.

Exceptional editing skills for high‑level op‑eds and academic correspondence.

Ability to pivot the Center’s focus toward emerging global crises, translating the Faculty Director’s vision into actionable research data.
