Senior Director/Managing Director, Executive Communications

Bully Pulpit International, Washington, District of Columbia, United States

Bully Pulpit International is an outcomes agency made up of strategists, data scientists, and artists. We come from politics, brands, and government. We have more than 350 team members in six countries and thirteen offices — Berlin, Brussels, Chicago, D.C., London, Los Angeles, New York, Oslo, San Francisco, and Zürich. We apply our unique expertise across strategic communications, public affairs, research, and digital marketing to create sophisticated and customized strategies that make change possible for both American and European clients.

The Impact You Will Make BPI's clients are navigating a high-speed collision of cultural shifts, political volatility, and economic transformation. The bar for leadership has never been higher. Today, it isn't enough for an executive to simply "manage"; they must lead the conversation. We empower leaders to seize their moment, using their influence to break news and shape beliefs. From elevating global reputations to winning high-stakes policy fights, we don't just share information—we move the needle.

As a Leader of our Speechwriting & Executive Communication Team

Own the Narrative: Partner with BPI's non-profit, corporate, and political clients to define their voice and enhance their visibility

Lead the Charge: Step into a senior role within our Strategic Communications practice, spearheading major client engagements and driving results

The ideal candidate is a professional who can help craft communications for some of the most iconic leaders and companies in the world and is energized by brainstorming interesting arguments that our clients can make, conversations they can lead, ideas they can introduce, and new ways to move their companies and the world forward. In addition, we're looking for this person to be a talented writer who has a passion for research, knows how to move audiences (while making audiences feel moved), and doesn't cringe at the idea of occasionally bantering in puns.

As part of the candidate evaluation process, we ask candidates that participate in interviews to submit samples of past work (particularly speeches and op-eds), and to potentially participate in a brief writing test

Starting salary range - $150,000 - $175,000

Expectation to work from one of our office locations at least 3x a week

What The Day-to-Day Looks Like

Intellectual Architecture & Content

While the deliverables vary, this is a role for a rigorous thinker and gifted writer. You won't just "produce content"; you will architect the intellectual capital of some of the world’s most influential leaders.

The Mission: Crafting high‑stakes keynote speeches, op‑eds, and annual report letters

Leadership: You will set the standard for writing excellence, acting as both a primary author for critical communications and a high‑level mentor who sharpens the creative instincts of our junior team

Executive Platform Innovation

You will collaborate with clients and internal partners not just to develop and put language to ideas, but to build the platforms to elevate and share them.

Client & Account Partnership

You serve as a high‑level advisor to BPI’s partners and our client’s c‑suite leaders.

Strategic Counsel: Rather than just managing "daily execution," you act as a trusted strategist for executive‑level decision‑makers

Account Management: You work with BPI’s internal teams to advance their vision further and solidify BPI’s role as an essential partner

Firm Growth & Thought Leadership

We want a leader who builds—both relationships and reputations.

The Pitch: You are comfortable leading the charge on new business, drafting proposals that feel like a call to action rather than a sales deck

External Profile: You will contribute to the agency's own intellectual capital, sharing insights on trends you and we are seeing.

Expansion: Your best business development tool is your brilliance; you grow existing relationships by consistently delivering ideas that the client didn't even know they needed

Agency Strategy & Culture

You are a stakeholder in our future.

Legacy Building: You'll provide critical feedback on the agency's long‑term strategic direction, helping us evolve as fast as the world around us

Mentorship: You drive our culture by spotting and nurturing "industry‑leading talent," ensuring the next generation of BPI leaders is as hungry and creative as you are

Requirements

12-15 years of research, writing, and communications experience, preferably in a communications agency, nonprofit, political or corporate communications setting

Excellent written and oral communications skills*

The ability to work with clients of different backgrounds and styles, who request deliverables ranging from a tweet to a toast, an op‑ed to a journal article, a commencement address to an industry conference keynote

Exceptional ability to deliver both creative and strategic writing under tight timelines

Sharp analytical skills and the ability to synthesize quantitative and qualitative research into clear and compelling messaging

Proven project management experience, including overseeing a team producing deliverables for multiple clients

Experience providing clear feedback to team members

Strong interpersonal skills that build trust and rapport with clients over long time periods

Expertise with Google Suite
