SEASONAL THERAPEUTIC RECREATION SPECIALIST
To assist in organizing and implementing a variety of recreational and educational activities and programs for individuals with special needs.
SUPERVISION Receives direction from the Recreation Therapist and general supervision from the Assistant Recreation Therapist.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist in coordinating, promoting, implementing and supervising a variety of recreation activities and programs including preparing and distributing flyers and posters, setting up facilities and fields for events and maintaining activity calendars and bulletin boards.
Maintain recreation facilities and equipment in a neat and orderly manner; clean kitchen and cooking utensils as needed; take inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials.
Participate in center meetings; assist in evaluating program techniques and content and perform client assessments.
Prepare and submit daily and monthly attendance reports.
Participate in teaching recreation classes such as arts and crafts and outdoor games to program participants.
Supervise children on playgrounds; supervise organized games and act as referee.
May be required to perform general clerical duties such as light typing and filing.
Participate in the organization and planning for special events.
Transport participants to and from daily programs and special events.
Interact with various participants who may require guidance and use pre-determined training methods with specific individuals as needed and as directed by the Recreation Therapist and/or Assistant Recreation Therapist.
Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to mechanical, electrical, dust/mites, and fume/odor hazards; exposure to extreme heat, cold and constant noise; writing; walking; stooping; standing; sorting; sitting; seeing; lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds; grasping; climbing; cleaning; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively, in person, and by telephone; fine finger manipulation; operation of a copier, tv, vcr, stereo, helium tank, and athletic equipment; operating a bus and van through city traffic.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of techniques of supervising children during recreation activities.
General program content for community recreation activities in area of assignment.
Recreational, cultural, and social needs of the community.
Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Basis mathematics.
ABILITY TO
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Assist in coordinating, organizing and implementing recreation and leisure time activities and specialized events.
Work with the disabled, children and adults, in supervising recreation activities and services.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or GED required. Some experience in directing recreation activities and working with the disabled is highly desirable.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Possession of a valid Texas Driver's License.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within one month, CPR, First Aid and AED Certifications.
