ABOUT THE ROLE

Drive the growth of a high-performing litigation practice at a firm where strategy meets execution. As Director, Business Development, you’ll sit at the center of practice, department, and firmwide priorities—translating them into targeted initiatives that generate demand and elevate market presence. You’ll lead and inspire a dedicated BD team, setting clear goals, metrics, and priorities while bringing a sharp, experience-driven understanding of how clients select outside counsel.

You’ll act as a strategic partner and thought leader, shaping sophisticated marketing approaches and collaborating closely with the communications team to secure meaningful media visibility, rankings, and directory placements. With a focus on precision and impact, you’ll ensure every initiative is delivered flawlessly, with data-driven insights and polished content. Above all, you’ll champion exceptional client service, ensuring every touchpoint reinforces the firm’s reputation for excellence.

Responsibilities

Partner with practice leaders and key stakeholders to set strategic goals, plans, and budgets that drive growth across litigation practices

Guide attorneys and BD team members in developing clear, actionable business development plans aligned with firm priorities

Advise litigation partners on sophisticated marketing and BD strategies grounded in deep industry and client insight

Identify emerging legal and market trends to uncover new client opportunities and shape proactive BD responses

Align litigation BD efforts with firmwide strategy in collaboration with senior marketing and business development leadership

Lead high-impact, firmwide BD initiatives (e.g., client feedback programs, cross-team processes, internal tools) that enhance effectiveness and collaboration

Drive targeted growth strategies, including client targeting, cross-selling, and client retention programs

Elevate the firm’s litigation profile through campaigns, events, media opportunities, and top-tier rankings and directory submissions

Oversee the development of compelling, high-quality marketing materials, pitches, and digital content tailored to win work

Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing BD team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and continuous growth

About You

Bachelors degree required; MBA or JD preferred

12+ years of professional services marketing experience, with prior law firm experience required

Deep expertise in litigation practices, with hands-on experience supporting litigation groups

Advanced knowledge of marketing and BD fundamentals, including competitive intelligence, market research, and pitch/RFP strategy

Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams in a collaborative environment

Strong business acumen with a track record of identifying and executing growth opportunities

Exceptional writing, editing, and content development skills for diverse audiences

Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; thrives in a matrixed organization

Highly organized with strong project management skills; able to prioritize and deliver under tight deadlines

Analytical and detail-oriented, with the ability to synthesize data, anticipate challenges, and drive sound decisions

Client-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering exceptional service and value

Salary information:

Where required by law, salary ranges are stated below. The range displayed is specifically for positions performed in those cities/states and may vary based on factors including local market data and ranges; an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience; and certain degrees, licensing, and certifications.

New York, San Francisco salary range: $212k to $296k

Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. salary range: $201k to $281k
