Senior Marine Underwriter (Hull/P&I)

As a Hull & P&I Senior Underwriter, you will underwrite and manage new business and renewals within the Ocean Marine space, with a focus on commercial fishing, passenger vessels, and other Hull/P&I exposures. This role requires deep industry expertise, technical underwriting skills, and the ability to foster strong agency relationships. You will work within One80’s specialized marine practice and be a key contributor to program growth and profitability.
Your Impact:
New Business & Renewals:
Select, rate, and underwrite new and renewal accounts to achieve production, retention, and profitability targets within your defined authority. Agency Relationship Management:
Manage relationships with assigned agencies, conduct quarterly agency visits, and support new business development through proactive engagement. Team Collaboration:
Provide guidance and task delegation to team members including Analysts, Raters, Associate Underwriters, and Underwriting Technicians. Claims Coordination:
Work with internal and external claims resources to ensure coordinated claims handling and client support. Referral Management:
Refer risks that exceed your authority to the Department Manager, accompanied by thorough analysis and recommendations. Workflow Management:
Maintain an efficient workflow and underwriting process for your assigned territory, meeting departmental service and operational standards. Reinsurance Negotiation:
Negotiate excess or quota-share reinsurance placements when required to meet capacity or pricing needs. Training & Mentorship:
Assist in the training and development of other team members by sharing your expertise and supporting skill development. Performance Monitoring:
Track results including hit ratios, lost business, and profitability against goals defined by the Department Manager. Market Engagement:
Attend industry events, stay informed on market trends, and deepen product expertise in Hull & P&I coverage areas. Successful Candidates Will Have:
5+ years of experience in commercial marine underwriting, including experience with hull and P&I Ability and desire to continue professional development through industry and/or outside courses to obtain a professional designation.
