Position Summary:
Intermountain Infrastructure Group (IIG) is creating the backbone of network connectivity across the West. The company provides organizations with large bandwidth needs in the Western states and provinces, delivering the infrastructure and services required to plan, implement, and maintain network connectivity—both locally and to major network interconnection points and large data center clusters. The infrastructure provided enables clients to deliver high-speed internet and reliable telecommunications to the customers they serve. The team’s depth of experience combines technology, thought leadership, and hands-on implementation skills to guide projects from concept to successful completion.
IIG is seeking an experienced Director of Tax to oversee global tax responsibilities across the organization. This role will be a key member of the Finance Team, reporting to the CFO and working closely with the C‑Suite. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in creating structured processes that provide visibility around tax reporting and planning. Responsibilities:
Multi‑Jurisdictional Tax Reporting and Planning Oversight, leading all tax planning and compliance across multiple western U.S. States and western Canadian provinces, including:
Oversee the preparation and review of annual quarterly tax provisions under US GAAP
Sales & use tax returns and review of sales tax accruals
Income tax return workpapers for U.S. partnership including nine state returns (and growing)
Canadian income tax and GST tax
Property tax appraisals, accruals and cash flow projections, including management of the valuation and appeal processes
Prepare income tax projections for U.S. partnership and Canadian corporation
Additional reporting and requirements specific to individual states or provinces
Additional day‑to‑day operational support responsibilities include:
Determine and monitor tax nexus as IIG network expands into new municipalities and rural districts
Track changes in tax laws to ensure compliance across multiple jurisdictions
Identify and secure tax incentives related to national, state or provincial incentive programs
Review business license applications and renewals
Support Sales and Legal Teams on customer and vendor contract‑related tax matters
Oversee Tax due diligence for debt and equity financing, as well as M&A
Lead any necessary tax audit discussions
Review of customer and vendor tax exemption certificates
Prepare and review monthly tax payments and reconciliations
Personnel management of a direct report to the Director of Tax
Serve as primary liaison with third‑party telecom regulatory management firms, ensuring accurate and timely completion of regulatory filings, including all USAC (Universal Service Administrative Company) returns and related telecom compliance obligations.
Oversee preparation, review, and maintenance of tax workpapers, ensuring they are complete, supportable, and aligned with audit standards.
Perform monthly and quarterly reconciliations to validate that all tax‑related balances are properly reflected in the company’s general ledger accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies proactively.
Provide tax guidance for global customer billings, including evaluating indirect tax requirements (e.g., Sales Tax, GST), supporting accurate customer invoicing across multiple jurisdictions.
Act as liaison to the company’s property tax management firm, overseeing the accuracy and completeness of property tax return filings, assessments, and payments, and ensuring proper accounting treatment for related liabilities.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration with a Master’s Degree and or Master’s Degree in taxation, a plus
CPA preferred
10+ years tax experience (Including some with sales and use tax, income tax and telecom central assessment property tax)
5+ years telecom experience (Construction experience a plus)
Proven experience in tax planning, compliance, and reporting
Strong knowledge of domestic and international tax laws
Proficiency in financial software (Sage ERP a plus)
Ability to translate complex tax implications to non‑tax stakeholders
Skills:

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a digital team environment
