Job Overview The Associate Publisher (AP) is responsible for the continued growth and detailed editorial strategy for journals in the assigned portfolio. The AP works directly with the Editors in Chief to define short- and long‑term strategic goals for each title and oversees their execution and assessment. The AP is ultimately responsible for ensuring that their assigned journals grow strategically and meet the needs of their respective communities. In collaboration with marketing and communication colleagues, the AP develops and contributes to specific portfolio strategies to broaden visibility for authors, the portfolio, and the journal program. This position supervises the Managing Editor(s).

Essential Functions

Perform market gap and competitor analysis and identify areas of content strength and weakness, as well as regularly assess journal scope and criteria.

Drive new ideas in peer review and scientific publishing, responsible for developing effective community engagement strategies.

Identify and implement supports for the Academic Editors within their portfolio, performing community outreach, and representing the portfolio and ASM Journals at scientific meetings and conferences.

Oversee the Managing Editor in designing and implementing editorial workflows and features, in the development of journal homepage features, and reporting of daily operations.

Provide oversight and guidance to the Managing Editor as needed for manuscript handling issues or in the enforcement of editorial or production policies and respond to Author/Editor/Reviewer queries as needed.

Collaborate with Marketing and Communication colleagues to develop and contribute to specific portfolio strategies to broaden visibility for authors, the portfolio, and the journal program.

Collaborate with Production and Operations to ensure journals are running smoothly and offering the best experience to authors.

Supervisory Responsibility

For employees reporting directly to this position, the incumbent is responsible for making hiring decisions, managing the annual performance appraisal process, coaching, mentoring, and providing approval for vacation & time‑off requests.

All facets of this position are self‑directed within the policies and procedures approved by the Board of Directors, and guidelines established by the department’s Director in partnership with the organization’s Senior Leadership team.

This position is responsible to the CEO, the COO and the department’s Director for the department’s fiscal management and, in this capacity, rules on the allocation of expenditures.

In partnership with the department’s Director, this position is responsible for departmental decision‑making regarding personnel actions, the acquisition and utilization of resources, procedures, and control systems.

This position supports the department’s Director in overseeing the development of budgets for all existing programs and new proposals, providing signatory approval for expenditures, contracts, subcontracts, and personal service agreements.

Physical Demands This role is primarily sedentary and involves prolonged periods of sitting and extensive use of computers and other digital devices. Employees may be required to engage in repetitive motions such as typing and mouse use. Occasional movement may be necessary to access office supplies or equipment within a home or remote workspace. This requires a reliable internet connection and a suitable home office setup, including standard equipment such as a computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headset. Ergonomic considerations are encouraged to promote comfort and reduce physical strain during extended work hours.

Travel Requirements 10%

Salary Range $105,024.00- $139,162.00
