The Role:

The Senior Director, Environment of Care provides leadership, oversight, and support to ensure effective execution of functions and activities for departments responsible for environment of care compliance across the region. These departments may include Facilities Engineering, Environmental Services (EVS), Safety, Security, and Emergency Management.

This role manages and coordinates leaders across each ministry within the assigned region, leveraging specialized expertise to drive continuous improvement in standards, protocols, and daily operations. The Senior Director promotes and applies consistent models and approaches to reduce variation, improve performance, and control costs while ensuring highquality, compliant services.

The Senior Director partners with peer regions and system stakeholders to share expertise, align approaches, and support consistent application of Providence Health & Services standards across the enterprise. This role ensures that all assigned departments deliver services in a uniform manner and in full compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements, while performing duties consistent with the Providence Mission and Core Values.

What You'll Do:

Strategic Leadership & Regional Oversight

  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and support for environment of care functions across the assigned region's hospitals and facilities, including Facilities Engineering, EVS, Safety, Security, and Emergency Management.
  • Inform and educate facility and ministry leadership on systemwide vision, standards, and performance goals.
  • Serve as regional representation in the development and implementation of standardized system initiatives, ensuring regional and community needs are understood.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

  • Maintain current knowledge of regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and environment of care criteria.
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, and other applicable codes and regulatory agencies by leading and supervising compliance management processes.
  • Assess compliance with the Life Safety Code, complete the electronic Statement of Conditions (eSOC), and manage resolution of deficiencies within assigned disciplines.

Operational Excellence & Standardization

  • Direct implementation of standardized management processes, policies, reporting formats, and data management practices consistent with Providence standards.
  • Lead safety and operational improvement initiatives, monitor results, and support quality, service improvement, and costreduction strategies.
  • Review organizational structures and work processes; initiate improvement activities as necessary.
  • Share innovative practices and bestinclass processes through regional and system councils.

Financial Stewardship & Resource Management

  • Direct development and monitoring of operational expense and capital budgets for the assigned region.
  • Oversee group purchasing processes for service contracts, ensuring appropriate participation and alignment with system standards and goals.
  • Support ministry leaders and the RESO team in developing longterm capital budgets and facility reinvestment programs.

Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Direct emergency response planning for the assigned region.
  • Support and participate in responses to emergency events, providing leadership, guidance, and resources as required.
  • Ensure participation in emergency exercises, fire drills, and required training programs.

People Leadership & Talent Development

  • Manage and support regional directors and managers, including hiring, performance evaluation, counseling, discipline, training, development, and advancement.
  • Oversee development and delivery of standardized training and education programs to maintain competency of leaders and staff.
  • Chair the region's HealthStream Environment of Care training program in collaboration with Organizational Development partners.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by working with community organizations and trade associations to reflect local workforce diversity.

Communication, Engagement & Culture

  • Develop and maintain trusted relationships with ministry senior leaders, department leadership, and staff through effective, timely, and transparent communication.
  • Support the free exchange of ideas and best practices across ministries and regions.
  • Develop and deliver presentations on regulatory compliance, management processes, system goals, performance measures, and project status to audiences at all levels.

What You'll Bring:

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, General Business, Hospital Administration, or related field; or Journeyman Plant Operations Engineer certification; or equivalent education/experience.

Required Conditions

Leadership & Overall Experience

  • 8+ years of leadership experience in plant operations, maintenance, safety, and/or security programs within healthcare or similarly complex, multicampus environments.
  • 10+ years of healthcare industry experience, including supervision of staff.
  • 10+ years of experience in one or more services directly related to Environment of Care.

Technical & Regulatory Expertise

  • Expert knowledge of:
  • Federal, state, and local safety and environmental health codes and regulations
  • Joint Commission Accreditation Standards and CMS Conditions of Participation
  • Facility systems including electrical, mechanical, building controls, fire safety, and alarm systems
  • CDC requirements and ASHRAE standards related to infection risk mitigation
  • Strong understanding of environment of care programs, compliance management, and regulatory readiness.

Professional & Leadership Capabilities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate teams remotely across geographic regions.
  • Strong organizational, strategic planning, process improvement, and project management skills.
  • Proven ability to analyze and interpret financial data and manage budgets effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including formal presentations to senior and executive leadership.
  • Political awareness and strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with executives, regulators, labor organizations, and external partners.
  • Ability to establish priorities, exercise sound judgment, problemsolve, and adapt in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Proficiency with computers, maintenance management systems, and standard office software.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and decisionmaking excellence.

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.
