Overview Senior Director, Associate General Counsel - US Commercial & Product (Discover Network). The Capital One Legal Department seeks an experienced corporate/commercial attorney to join the Global Payment Network Legal team. It also involves day-to-day management of the US Commercial and Product Legal team supporting the Discover Network. The Legal Department aims to be a proactive, strategic partner rather than a mere check-the-box function. About the Role The attorney will serve as the lead attorney for the Discover Network on the US Commercial and Product team with expertise in commercial contracting. Responsibilities include: Providing expert counsel and strategic guidance across areas affecting commercial relationships, including contracting and risk identification and mitigation Leading a team of legal professionals negotiating and drafting a variety of commercial agreements and advising on matters affecting issuer, acquirer, and merchant relationships Negotiating, drafting, and guiding implementation of commercial agreements in collaboration with legal and business colleagues Acting as lead subject matter expert on the Global Payment Network’s credit products, including regulatory overlays applicable to Credit and related regulatory developments Leading credit, fintech, and payment innovation related new product initiatives across the Discover Network Supporting development and maintenance of competitive rule sets for the Discover Network Identifying and supporting process improvements to promote agility in legal and related business operations, including contract template improvements Partnering collaboratively with other internal counsel and business teams across the enterprise Partnering with Risk and Compliance teams to ensure comprehensive support Qualifications The successful candidate will have the following: Demonstrated leadership qualities and the ability to resolve issues across organizational borders Ability to understand complex topics quickly with depth to provide concise and simple advice Problem-solving mindset beyond a sole legal technician perspective Excellent judgment with the ability to predict long-term consequences Growth mindset with openness to new ideas, diverse perspectives, and unconventional solutions Strong people skills to build collegial and effective relationships with colleagues and clients Ownership mentality, thinking like an owner Solid time management skills with the ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and manage multiple deadlines Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence and write concisely Basic Qualifications Juris Doctor from an accredited law school Active member in good standing of at least one state bar At least 10 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm, government, military judge advocate, or in-house counsel Preferred Qualifications 12+ years of experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or a combination 2+ years of commercial contracting experience Merchant and/or payment network experience At this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position. The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries are for candidates hired to work within the listed locations and reflect the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based on hours worked. McLean, VA: $269,600 - $307,700 for Sr Director, Assoc Gen. Counsel New York, NY: $294,100 - $335,700 for Sr Director, Assoc Gen. Counsel Richmond, VA: $245,100 - $279,800 for Sr Director, Assoc Gen. Counsel Riverwoods, IL: $245,100 - $279,800 for Sr Director, Assoc Gen. Counsel Candidates hired in other locations will receive a pay range corresponding to that location. The actual offer will be stated in the offer letter. This role is eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives (LTI).
