AFG Sustainability Director

Role Summary The AFG Sustainability Director will lead JE Dunn’s sustainability efforts. This position will develop and implement the company’s Sustainability plan as part of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, ensure compliance with relevant regulations, and drive continuous improvement across the organization.

Key Role Responsibilities - Core

Develop, implement, monitor, and communicate an environmental strategy in alignment with the company’s mission and goals, in partnership with executive leadership.

Establish policies, procedures, and metrics to track and report progress toward sustainability goals, including A1–A5 carbon emissions lifecycle.

Provide regular updates to the leadership team on performance and progress toward sustainability goals.

Gather consumption and carbon data, create a company carbon baseline, and report on the environmental and financial impact of the carbon footprint.

Utilize climate‑related scenario analysis (qualitative and quantitative) to inform strategic initiatives.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders and the Executive Leadership Team to integrate sustainability considerations into business decisions and operations.

Review and analyze environmental risks and opportunities and provide recommendations on risk mitigation and business opportunities.

Manage sustainability reporting and disclosure, including the preparation of sustainability reports and other environmental‑related communications.

Develop and implement training programs and initiatives to promote sustainability awareness and education across the organization.

Implement and maintain an Environmental Management System.

Monitor and evaluate regulatory changes related to ESG and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Support project delivery as needed related to sustainability strategy, monitoring, and reporting.

Support project teams by creating content to respond to RFPs regarding environmental and sustainability information and by participating in client interviews as appropriate.

Respond to inquiries on the company’s behalf regarding sustainability goals.

Engage with external stakeholders, including investors, customers, and suppliers, on environmental and sustainability matters.

Advanced proficiency in MS Office.

Proficiency with EPD platforms/dashboards and associated software systems.

Proficiency of the A1–A5 carbon emissions lifecycle.

Thorough knowledge of environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and reporting frameworks.

Strong project‑management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.

Experience working with cross‑functional teams.

Ability to apply lean process and philosophy.

Knowledge of construction process methods.

Ability to manage budgets, maximize profitability, and generate future work through building relationships.

Technical market expertise with knowledge of industry trends and innovations.

Knowledge of project processes and how each supports successful project completion.

Ability to build and maintain relationships across teams, internally and externally.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, architecture, or related field (Required).

Master’s degree (Preferred).

Equivalent relevant experience may be considered in lieu of the above requirements.

Experience

10+ years of sustainability or environmental management experience, preferably in construction or a related industry (Preferred).

5+ years of experience leading matrixed reporting relationships (Preferred).

Working Environment

Valid and unrestricted driver’s license required.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

Periods of travel may be required.

Willingness to work non‑traditional hours to meet project needs.

Potential exposure to extreme conditions (hot or cold).

Assignment may include project sites and/or office work.

Common activities: sitting, viewing computer screen; occasional: standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching above shoulder, pushing, pulling.

Benefits Information Base compensation for the AFG Sustainability Director role in Minnesota is between $158,000 and $198,000, depending on experience, and may be higher for candidates with exceptional experience and a demonstrated history of successful performance. The role is eligible to receive a target bonus based on both individual and company performance.
