POSITION SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, the Media Relations Assistant will help create and promote the Athletic Department’s brand, strategy and mission to the media, community, recruits, donors, and student population, through the creation of feature stories, news releases, social posts, graphics, video, and website applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES The Media Relations Assistant is responsible for leading the day‑to‑day operations of assigned sports and all the communications activities and game management details. Day‑to‑day activities include writing, social media development and deployment, statistics, graphic design, supervision and assignment of game day table crew and planning and execution of all press events, interviews, photo shoots and press conferences. This position is responsible for development, management, and dissemination of creative written projects as well as game day operations such as statistics, rosters, game notes, ESPN+ collaboration, and social media. Will serve as a liaison with NCAA and Big West constituents as well as managing radio and television personnel. Maintain team, staff and student‑athlete content and photography. Will be responsible for statistics and record keeping, reporting to NCAA and Big West as well as nominating weekly, monthly, and yearly awards. Must have knowledge and understanding of all statistical applications to facilitate not only coaching staff requests but media members whether it is print, television and/or radio. Ability to create an atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation within the External Relations group and Athletic Department, encouraging creativity and innovation.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1-3 years working in media relations and sports information.
Thorough knowledge of the concepts and principles of news, media communications, and media relations.
Thorough skills in understanding and utilizing and effectively utilizing all news / media mediums including broadcast news, the internet, social media, and other emerging technologies.
Understanding of digital technologies and digital content strategies for communications, marketing, and brand building.
Statistical knowledge in the sports of basketball, volleyball, baseball, and water polo.
Knowledge in NCAA LiveStats and FOSH graphic design and social media platforms.
Professional writing ability and a demonstrated ability to compose and edit copy for publications, press releases and other marketing and development materials with an emphasis on storytelling, clear communication, and understanding of the topics that enhance the mission of the department and university.
Strong research, analytical, and thorough organizational and time management skills with good judgment and political acumen.
Highly collaborative style with experience developing and implementing communications strategies.
Ability to accept edits/changes from multiple parties before producing final product.
Demonstrated relationship-building, consensus-building, flexibility, and communicating effectively with diverse audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships both within the Athletic Department and University as well as external constituencies.
Demonstrated project management skills to manage multiple and complex projects simultaneously.
Demonstrated ability to work independently.
Willing and able to adjust to changing demands and shifting priorities with the ability to determine and carry out priorities in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short‑term strategic communications plans.
Must work nights, weekends, and holidays.
