SUMMARY Under direct supervision of the Woodland Hills Grounds Supervisor the golf course laborer will be trained in course management including equipment operation, rotary work, trimming, bunker work, sod work, mowing of greens, tees, collars and approaches, watering and clean-up. Applicant must be able to follow directions, be a motivated self-starter and conduct oneself in a professional manner. Must be able to pass drug/alcohol screening test and be at least 18 years old. Season is March – November depending on weather.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Follows all City safety policies and procedures.

Receives written work orders or verbal instructions from supervisor.

Performs heavy manual tasks in the construction of golf course buildings and grounds.

Operates all golf course machinery i.e. tractors, mowers, and other power equipment.

Mows grass, turf, fairways, rough, greens, and tees.

Fertilizes and waters grass, rakes sand traps, and irrigates turf.

Changes cups, tee markers, and towels.

May plant trees, shrubs, plants, and flowers.

Assists in tree maintenance and removal operation, and cuts brush.

Gathers and disposes of leaves, rubbish, and paper; performs general clean-up tasks.

Drives a motorized vehicle or equipment.

Performs additional duties as needed or directed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Less than high school education; or up to one month related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance and motorized equipment desirable. Working knowledge of tractor operation and implementation desired. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment relating to the repair of irrigation and drainage systems desired.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must have valid drivers license and must meet the City’s driving history guidelines.

PHYIAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee performs tasks that will require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and sitting. Performs heavy lifting tasks up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.
