
Carrier Representative

Job Purpose:
The Carrier Representative is responsible for ensuring that all logistic orders are filled with transportation carriers in the most cost effective manner. The carrier representative continuously searches to increase RJW’s carrier-base by sourcing out new carriers and building lasting business relations.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Broker available freight.
Books orders with carriers via phone, e‑mail, and load posting services.
Contacts carriers and negotiates rates to move available freight.
Contacts shippers/consignees for appointments.
Monitors and participates in the dispatching of drivers when needed.
Helps in the resolution of problems related to shipments when needed.
Builds customer relations.
Keeps customers informed of order status and potential issues.
Keeps sales representative informed of order status.
Provides quotes on new lanes when requested.
Builds carrier relations.
Sources new carriers via phone and load posting services.
Signs up new carriers via the RJW packet and enters into the Logistics software.
Promotes goodwill with all carriers.
Continuously expands the carrier base.
Secondary duties:
Backs up Customer Service when needed.
Backs up Track and Trace shipments when needed.
Provides proof of delivery (PODs) to customers when needed.
Other tasks as assigned by manager.
Additional Responsibilities
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Knowledge and ability to enter data in Logistics software.
Excellent problem solving and resolution skills.
Ability to work under pressure situations.
Ability to multi‑task.
Detail oriented.
Qualifications
1 year+ experience in the field of logistics and/or transportation.
Education and Experience Required
High School Diploma required.
Language Skills
Must be able to communicate, read, write, and speak English.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and customers.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rate, ratio, and percent; draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret varying instructions and determine root cause to implement corrective action.
Computer Skills
Knowledge of Business Operating Systems, Internet software, Word processing, and Spreadsheet software.
Physical Demands
Must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds occasionally.
Must activate phone systems utilizing keyboards and buttons.
Must be articulate and comfortable speaking in front of others.
Works in an indoor/office environment, sitting and/or using repetitive hand motion.
Frequently required to talk, hear, stand and walk.
Must work beyond continuous 8 hours when required.
Must handle stressful situations, maintain accuracy, and multitask.
Requires 20/20 corrected vision for reading and discerning visual images.
Clear communication over telephone.
In sound physical health as determined by a certified physician with no controlled substance use.
Work Environment
May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles; noise ranges from quiet to moderately loud.
