Stanford University presents an exciting opportunity for an Editorial Assistant or Assistant Editor within its esteemed publishing division, Stanford University Press. Based in Redwood City, this full‑time, on-site position offers early‑career professionals a gateway into scholarly publishing, particularly within Middle East studies and digital publishing initiatives. Role Overview and Purpose The Editorial Assistant or Assistant Editor works closely with the Editor‑in‑Chief and acquisitions team, supporting the development and publication of high‑quality scholarly works. The role plays a central part in the manuscript lifecycle—from initial submission through peer review to final production. Supporting manuscript preparation and submission into production Coordinating peer review processes for proposals and manuscripts Managing publishing schedules and tracking contracted titles Overseeing permissions and publication agreements Collaborating across departments including marketing, production, and finance Core Responsibilities Assisting authors and editors in manuscript development and preparation Coordinating and monitoring peer review workflows Tracking project timelines and updating editorial schedules Managing permissions for copyrighted material Creating and distributing publication agreements Preparing materials for editorial board meetings Maintaining organized filing systems and databases Scheduling meetings, conferences, and internal communications Acting as a liaison between internal departments Required Qualifications and Skills High school diploma or equivalent Excellent written and verbal communication abilities Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines Proficiency in office software and email applications Strong interpersonal and customer service skills Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment Additional preferred qualifications: Bachelor’s or graduate degree in any field Familiarity with academic publishing or acquisitions processes Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and engagement Work Environment and Physical Requirements This is a desk‑based role requiring consistent computer use and prolonged sitting. Occasional physical activities may include standing or walking for short periods, light lifting (up to 10 pounds), filing, sorting, and handling documents.
