About This Role The Director of Finance & Treasurer is the financial backbone of Shift Alt Her. This person builds and maintains the financial infrastructure, controls, and reporting systems that allow SAH to operate with full transparency, accountability, and integrity. The Director of Finance ensures that every dollar received is tracked, every expense is documented, and every funder receives accurate and timely reporting. This role is critical to the organization’s ability to grow, secure grants, and scale its programs.
Core Responsibilities
Establish and oversee accounting processes for the organization
Oversee all bookkeeping, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and monthly bank reconciliations
Maintain the general ledger and ensure all transactions are accurately coded and documented
Manage and establish the organization’s chart of accounts and financial filing systems
Process and track all incoming donations, grants, sponsorship payments, and earned revenue
Manage vendor invoices, contractor payments, and all organizational disbursements
Budgeting and Planning
Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the CEO and department directors
Produce monthly budget-to-actual reports and present findings to the CEO
Monitor cash flow and provide proactive guidance on financial sustainability
Manage the organization’s operating reserve fund per board-approved policy
Grant and Funder Financial Compliance
Track all restricted and unrestricted funds separately and ensure donor-imposed restrictions are honored
Prepare financial reports and budgets for all grant applications and funder reportsEnsure compliance with all grant agreement terms related to allowable expenses and reporting timelines
Support the CEO and Grant Writer in preparing financial narratives and budgets for new grant proposals
Nonprofit Compliance and Reporting
Coordinate and prepare all documentation for the annual Form 990 tax return
Maintain compliance with IRS 501(c)(3) requirements and all state charitable registration obligations
Prepare for and manage the annual independent financial review or audit
Maintain all financial records in accordance with the SAH Document Retention Policy (7-year minimum)
Internal Controls and Fraud Prevention
Implement and enforce all financial controls outlined in the SAH Donor Funds Management Policy
Enforce separation of duties for all financial transactions
Conduct monthly reconciliation and flag any discrepancies to the CEO within 24 hours
Supervise the Grant Writer role within the Finance department
What We Are Looking For
Experience in nonprofit financial management strongly preferred
Proficiency in bookkeeping software such as QuickBooks, Wave, or similar
Working knowledge of nonprofit compliance requirements, including Form 990 and restricted fund accounting
Proven ability to research and implement general practices in full-cycle accounting and 501(c) financial standards needed to fulfill the role
Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable with high levels of confidentiality
Strong written communication skills for funder reports and board presentations
A mission-aligned professional who understands that financial integrity protects the women we serve
What Success Looks Like in Year One
Creation and establishment of the organization’s standard accounting and financial practices, approved by CEO
Clean chart of accounts with descriptions attached to each
Timely processing of clean monthly reconciliations delivered to the CEO by the 5th of each month without exception
First Form 990 prepared and filed on time
All restricted funds tracked and reported accurately to funders
Financial controls fully implemented per the SAH Donor Funds Management Policy
Operating reserve fund established and funded per board target
