About the Role The Senior Counsel will act as the first in-house legal hire for this company and play a key role in supporting the execution of a large‑scale, California‑based master‑planned communities. This attorney will focus on the implementation phase of the project—working closely with leadership on land use, entitlements, compliance, community structuring, and other California‑specific development requirements. The ideal candidate brings hands‑on experience with master‑planned communities, a strong understanding of California’s regulatory environment, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast‑moving, execution‑oriented setting.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and advise on land use and entitlement matters, including coordination with local agencies and understanding of California-specific requirements.
Oversee permitting, mapping, and county agency compliance, ensuring all aspects of the project meet applicable regulations.
Draft, review, and structure HOAs and CC&Rs, including nuanced components such as hotel residence clubs within a master HOA.
Support the creation and operation of private club membership programs associated with the development.
Handle DRE (Department of Real Estate) processing, including filings and compliance obligations for residential sales.
Draft, negotiate, and interpret easements and related property agreements.
Required Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school.
Experience with California master‑planned communities and the execution phases of real estate development.
Strong knowledge of California land use and entitlement processes, including interaction with local agencies.
Hands‑on experience with permitting, mapping, and county agency compliance.
Ability to draft and structure HOAs and CC&Rs, including complex components such as hotel residence clubs.
Familiarity with California DRE (Department of Real Estate) processing and related compliance requirements.
