Position Summary
Arborist I – East Lansing, Michigan, United States. The role involves maintaining and performing maintenance work for general tree and plant care, preservation, treatment, removal, and additional landscape maintenance operations. Responsibilities include climbing and trimming trees, identifying and treating tree and plant diseases, insects, and other related problems, conducting tree and plant removals, mixing and applying fertilizer and pesticide for injections and spraying, installing fencing, signage, and barricades for tree protection, documenting and maintaining databases, operating and maintaining tools and equipment, and handling campus landscape tasks. This position also requires participation in MSU Football tailgate clean up and campus snow removal plan by shoveling, operating snow removal vehicles, and applying ice‑melt products. Pay Rate

MSU Landscape Services has maintained Michigan State University’s campus as a living, learning laboratory since 1905. We are responsible for all aspects of landscape construction and maintenance, including snow removal, signage, hardscape maintenance, golf course maintenance, tree care, and general repair on campus. Job Responsibilities
35% – Performs maintenance work for tree and plant care, preservation, treatment, removal, and related maintenance and pruning operations; climbs and trims trees; identifies and treats tree and plant diseases, insects, and other related problems; performs cabling, bolting, guying, and bracing; operates hand tools, power tools, power equipment, and heavy equipment/machinery; cleans and maintains work areas, vehicles, power equipment, and hand tools; instructs support employees in proper work methods and safety techniques. 35% – Performs maintenance work for tree protection fencing, barricade and sign installation, root pruning, and other preservation methods used to protect trees during construction activities; plans, documents, and performs tasks to update and maintain databases and inventory logs, such as ArcGIS applications. 15% – Assists in football tailgate cleanup; participates in snow plan by shoveling, operating snow removal vehicles and equipment, and applying ice‑melt products. 15% – Handles correspondence through email, training, meetings, and professional development; identifies and mitigates health hazards within the working environment; provides customer service to the MSU Community and the public; responds or informs supervisory staff of complaints, comments, or unmet service needs. Minimum Requirements
Working knowledge of landscape equipment tools, climbing, ropes, safety equipment at heights, methods and processes used in arboriculture and grounds maintenance. Two years of satisfactory experience as an Arborist Trainee or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Three years of commercial snow removal experience operating a licensed plow vehicle. Ability to climb safely and effectively using ropes and other safety equipment while working at heights. Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification – Ornamental (3B), Right of Way (6), and Mosquito (7F). Possession or attainment of MSU Forklift, Loader, Tractor, and Toolcat Operators Permits prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period. Possession of a valid Michigan Class B Commercial Driver's License with applicable endorsements (air brakes) and medical certificate to comply with State of Michigan requirements; applicant must have a good driving record and provide operator's license number for a motor vehicle check. Must drive University vehicle to perform job duties of this classification and must meet University’s rigorous safe driving standards. Ability to work in variable or severe weather conditions. This position requires significant after‑hours, weekend, and holiday work. Frequent lifting of 26 to 75 pounds with occasional lifting over 75 pounds. Desired Qualifications
