Auto Body Shop Painter Department: Auto Body Shop Reports To: Body Shop Manager

Position Summary The Auto Body Shop Painter is responsible for preparing and applying paint to repaired vehicles and semi-trucks, ensuring high-quality finishes that meet manufacturer and company standards. This role supports production flow, maintains safety standards, and contributes to delivering a finished product that meets customer expectations and company quality goals.

Roles and Responsibilities Vehicle Surface Preparation Accountable for preparing vehicles for paint to ensure proper adhesion and finish quality.

Responsibilities:

Sand, featheredge, prime, and mask vehicle panels.

Clean and prepare surfaces before paint application.

Mix paint according to manufacturer specifications.

Ensure proper color matching.

Body work on vehicles and semi-trucks as needed.

Measurables:

Minimal rework due to poor preparation.

Maintains production schedule timelines.

Consistent paint adhesion and surface quality.

Paint Application & Finishing Accountable for applying paint and finishes that meet professional quality standards.

Responsibilities:

Apply primer, base coat, and clear coat using spray equipment.

Ensure even coverage and proper film thickness.

Blend paint for color matching across panels.

Polish and buff finished surfaces as needed.

Measurables:

Paint jobs meet quality inspection standards.

Minimal paint defects (runs, orange peel, contamination).

Reduced redo rates.

Quality Control & Final Inspection Accountable for delivering a finished product that meets shop and customer expectations.

Responsibilities:

Inspect paint work for color match and finish consistency.

Correct defects such as runs, dirt, or texture issues.

Work with body technicians to ensure proper panel alignment before paint.

Measurables:

Low rework percentage.

Customer satisfaction on finished jobs.

Vehicles pass final inspection without delay.

Shop Efficiency & Workflow Support Accountable for helping the shop maintain efficient production flow.

Responsibilities:

Coordinate with body technicians and project leads on job timelines.

Maintain an organized work area and paint booth.

Properly manage materials and supplies.

Assist in meeting weekly production targets.

Measurables:

Meets or exceeds expected labor hours.

Supports shop throughput goals.

Minimizes paint material waste.

Safety, Equipment, and Compliance Accountable for maintaining a safe and compliant work environment.

Responsibilities:

Follow all OSHA and shop safety procedures.

Properly use PPE and respiratory protection.

Maintain spray equipment and paint booth cleanliness.

Properly handle and store hazardous materials.

Measurables:

No safety violations.

Equipment maintained and operational.

Compliance with environmental and safety standards.

Key Skills and Qualifications Required:

Experience in automotive painting or collision repair

Knowledge of paint systems and color matching

Ability to operate spray guns and paint booth equipment

Strong attention to detail

Preferred:

I-CAR or ASE certifications

Experience with modern waterborne paint systems

Previous collision repair shop experience
