This position will remain open until filled.

Under immediate supervision, cooks and prepares food at the City of Thornton Active Adult Center. (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Responsibilities

Provides excellent customer service in a professional and courteous manner; assists patrons with reasonable requests, works with staff to ensure the highest level of patron satisfaction.

Prepares and cooks food using established recipes; portions meals for service, and maintains quality, presentation, and portion control.

Operates kitchen equipment including ovens, stoves, grills, fryers, and microwaves; ensures food and appliance temperatures meet safety standards.

Follows proper food handling, thawing, and sanitation protocols to comply with Public Health Regulations. Responsible for controlling spoilage and food waste.

Ensures a clean, sanitary, and safe kitchen and dining environment by performing cleaning tasks, sanitizing surfaces, washing dishes, and maintaining proper use of cleaning supplies and equipment. Sweeps, mops, empties trash, and performs cleaning tasks on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to meet City of Thornton standards.

Manages inventory by receiving and storing supplies, monitoring stock levels, rotating ingredients, and reporting or documenting inventory needs as necessary.

Reports kitchen maintenance needs or safety hazards to the appropriate personnel.

Sets up and maintains buffet for tournaments and events.

May direct and support volunteers, including explaining food service processes and program‑specific procedures.

May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Performs duties as assigned.

Education / Experience Must be at least 16 years of age. A basic understanding of kitchen equipment and appliances is required. One year of previous food service experience, including experience using a commercial dishwasher preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing / Certification Requirements May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner, as the job requires.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and goals of the city of Thornton, the Parks, Recreation, and Community Programs department, and the Community Connections division.

Knowledge of basic food preparation, arrangement, and sanitary food service practices.

Knowledge of Public Health Regulations and sanitary kitchen cleaning procedures.

Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of standard kitchen appliances and equipment (e.g., ovens, stoves, dishwashers).

Knowledge of principles and practices of effective customer service.

Skill in safe and proper operation of kitchen equipment and appliances, including commercial dishwashers.

Skill in maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe kitchen environment, including dry floors.

Skill in food preparation for small to large groups.

Skill in communicating tactfully and effectively with the public and various audiences.

Skill in organizing and managing multiple, competing tasks.

Ability to read, interpret, and understand recipes, instructions, and kitchen safety procedures (including measurement conversions, portioning, and temperature control).

Ability to use kitchen and cleaning equipment appropriately and safely.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.

Ability to apply policies, procedures, and health standards consistently.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.

Ability to provide quality customer service in a fast‑paced environment.

Ability to plan and prepare quality food efficiently for events and standard service.

Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or flexible schedules as required.

Physical and Mental Requirements While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions. This position is mostly medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned; is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources.
