General Purpose:

Under the direction of the Court Administrator, the Court Bailiff supports Municipal Court proceedings by maintaining order; ensuring courtroom safety; checking in people for court; placing defendants, jurors, and other court users in their respective locations in courtroom; performing duties in relation to warrant processing and related follow-up and delivery of summonses; and enforcing court rules as prescribed by the City of Decatur, State of Texas, and in conjunction with the Canons of Judicial Conduct as they relate to administration of court proceedings and maintaining order and decorum in the courtroom.

Supervision Exercised:

Employee has no supervisory responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for courtroom security.

Maintains order of the courtroom and court lobby.

Executes lawful orders issued by the municipal court.

Attends court sessions and maintains security for all participants by preparing courtroom hearings, trials and procedures; develop a security plan; attends to court participants; escort judge to and from the building providing protection.

Maintains security plans, safety evacuation plans and functions and disaster emergency preparedness by continuing to develop the safety plans; provides role play training; conducts periodical test drills.

Ensures the personal safety of the judges, staff and all persons in the courtroom and surrounding areas.

Screens and searches as necessary all the people entering the courtroom to prevent the carrying of weapons and/or contraband items into the building.

Reacts to emergencies and utilizes independent judgement in dealing with sensitive situations.

Adheres and comprehends to state and municipal codes, court policies, legal documents, and arrest procedures.

Attends meetings & training sessions, as required.

Other duties as assigned or required to perform the functions of the position.

Required Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED.

Preferred two (2) years of experience with a law enforcement agency as a police officer, bailiff, or in criminal investigations.

Employment Requirements:

Valid Texas Class C driver’s license is required with a good driving record.

Basic Peace Officer TCOLE Certificate.

Must have or be able to obtain a court security certification.

Must have or be able to obtain CPR, First Aid & AED Certification.

Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Providing incomplete, inaccurate information, and/or failure to report required information will cause Applicant’s rejection from consideration.

Applicant must take and pass a drug and physical screening administered at the expense of the City of Decatur, Texas.

Skill & Ability Requirements:

The ability to read and interpret the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, the Texas Transportation Code and ordinances, letters and publications.

The ability to recognize numbers, assess size, and use simple math and accounting procedures.

The ability to write letters.

Work is governed by broad instructions, objectives and policies. Requires the exercise of considerable initiative and independent analytical and evaluative judgment.

Duties require the ability to provide information and directions to citizens and explain and train subordinates.

The City reserves the right to allow an employee to obtain licenses/certifications during a reasonable time from agreed to in writing (unless otherwise prohibited or limited by law) as a condition of continued employment. Failure to obtain the licenses/certifications as agreed will result in termination.

Physical Demands While performing the duty of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand or sit for long periods as well as talk or listen. The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to handle or feel objects and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must routinely lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment The primary work location is in an office environment, with a moderate noise level. The employee must have the ability to work well with others and have a good/pleasant attitude.

The employee is periodically exposed to persons who represent a danger to health and life.

FLSA STATUS: Part‑time Non‑exempt

Wage: $28.00 - $32.00/hr.
