POSITION SUMMARY The Public Affairs Campaign Strategist works closely with the Director of Public Affairs Campaigns, VP of Public Affairs and Communications, and litigation, lobbying, and communications staff to design, develop, and implement communications campaigns that drive advocacy outcomes. This role leads day‑to‑day management and implementation of long‑term advocacy campaigns, develops key narratives and messaging for policy issues, conducts research, identifies and targets key decision makers and stakeholders, engages and organizes partners, and coordinates cross‑team efforts on advocacy, storytelling, media outreach, and government relations. The position is full‑time (37.5 hours/week) and may be hybrid from Washington, D.C. (preferred) or remotely within the U.S.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Strategy & Coordination (30%)

Partner with program and communications staff to design, plan, align, and execute select long‑term advocacy communications campaigns, incorporating stakeholder engagement, policy goals, communication strategies, and litigation.

Use a data‑informed approach, including market research, polling, focus groups, to set measurable advocacy goals, key messaging, target audiences, and innovative communication strategies.

Coordinate with partners, clients, and coalitions on joint advocacy campaigns, issue education, engagement, mobilization, and media; may represent the organization externally.

Create digital advocacy tactics to achieve campaign goals.

Media and Coalition-Building (30%)

Implement earned media, social, and digital strategies.

Work with traditional and new media to secure Earthjustice coverage; maintain relationships with reporters and coordinate press events.

Engage partners to popularize policy goals and influence decision makers using owned, earned, and paid channels.

Coordinate coalition strategies for issue advocacy, public outreach, media, and government relations; identify partnerships with local and national organizations and community groups.

Content Creation & Branding (25%)

Build Earthjustice’s external presence and develop internal message guidance; collaborate with marketing, fundraising, and content staff on major initiatives.

Drive storytelling and advocacy projects; create compelling content strategies aligned with advocacy, marketing, and fundraising goals.

Draft and edit digital and print content, ensuring tonal and message consistency; produce high‑quality work in a fast‑changing environment.

Administrative Tasks (15%)

Manage contracts, invoices, and vendor day‑to‑day work.

Develop strategy documents and timelines, manage budgets, and track metrics to assess effectiveness and inform future strategy.

Maintain and update project management tools and work plans.

Perform other administrative tasks as needed.

Ongoing Learning

Continuously pursue professional development, share knowledge, and stay informed about innovative communication practices and movement trends.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

5+ years’ experience in nonprofit/advocacy communications, including strategy, campaign management, content creation, and media outreach.

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism, political science, communications, environmental studies, public policy preferred but not required.

Direct experience implementing advocacy campaigns at the state or federal level.

Experience with digital advocacy is a plus.

Proven success placing media stories, opinion pieces, and narratives that influence policy conversations.

Outstanding project management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and coordinate detailed outreach projects under tight deadlines.

Experience collaborating with diverse internal and external partners; strong interpersonal skills to lead teams and coordinate coalitions toward shared goals.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex issues into compelling, accessible messaging.

SALARY & BENEFITS

Work environment is casual and congenial.

Salary ranges vary by location and experience.

Salary range in Washington, D.C.: $117,600 - $130,700.

Salary ranges for other locations:

San Francisco, CA and New York, NY: $123,800 - $137,500

Chicago, IL; Seattle, WA; Los Angeles, CA: $117,600 - $130,700

Denver, CO; Philadelphia, PA: $111,400 - $123,800

Miami, FL; Bozeman, MT; New Orleans, LA: $105,200 - $116,900

Other remote locations: $105,200 - $130,700
