Position Overview Earthwork Assistant Superintendent contributes to the process of building the earthwork component of a project including site grading, road construction, road improvements, drainage improvements, road maintenance, dewatering, soil correction, foundation excavation and backfill, utilities and any other necessary civil improvements required for a project.
Duties/Responsibilities
Manage a wide variety of earthwork and civil utilities applications
Provide direct in-field supervision of all phases of earthwork, site construction and underground utility construction
Ensure timely project completion through project scheduling, coordination of subcontractor trades, expediting material deliveries to the management of material, equipment and personnel
Submit field reports, track time on task, track onsite material inventory and deliveries
Ensures that records, time and quantities are completed daily
Education and Training
Minimum of 5 years of relevant heavy equipment operating experience
Thorough knowledge of soils
Thorough knowledge of site utilities
Excellent understanding of contract documents
Excellent experience with procuring, scheduling and maintaining large excavation equipment including dozers, track hoes, tractors, scrapers etc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Self‑motivated with the ability to work productively without constant supervision
Ability to manage multiple operations ongoing at the same time whether on the same project site or multiple sites
Ability to lead large self‑perform crews
Thorough understanding and working knowledge of the Vaughn safety plan
Extensive knowledge of Vaughn procedures
Able to contribute to daily and weekly safety meetings and audits
Knowledge of means and methods to all earthwork and civil utilities construction scopes
Ability to interpret the project estimate and maintain the project budget
Able to contribute to Pre‑Install Meetings, Site Safety Meeting, Pull Plan Meetings, and Subcontractor Meetings
Ability to manage and execute project activities as required to meet day‑to‑day and overall schedule
Ability to project manpower for duration of project
Ability to understand and execute the requirements in project documents with regard to quality control procedures, testing, shop drawings, material approvals, samples, mock‑ups and etc.
Provide input on scheduling and placement of production crews. Ability to plan, create, and maintain a schedule for the overall project
Ability to procure and schedule material to the project site

Climb ladders
Walk projects to supervise work being installed
