Assistant Choir Director and Accompanist

Jefferson City School District, Jefferson City, MO, United States

Position Title: Assistant Choir Director & Accompanist FLSA: Exempt

Qualifications Must hold proper state certification or possess equivalent experience and qualifications in choral accompanying/piano performance.

Reports To Head Choir Director and Principal and/or Supervisor.

Jefferson City High School is searching for an accomplished and collaborative teacher/musician to serve as its Assistant Choral Director and Accompanist. As Assistant Choral Director/Accompanist, you will work in partnership with the Head Choral Director to support and help lead a program of 3 curricular choirs: Chorale, the top auditioned mixed ensemble; Bella Voce, a select women’s ensemble; and Concert Choir, the non‑auditioned choir.

Primary responsibilities include daily piano accompaniment for rehearsals and performances, assisting with rehearsals, sectional instruction, and student musicianship development. Additional responsibilities may include teaching or assisting with other fine‑arts duties/classes within your expertise as assigned according to district needs.

There is an extra‑curricular choir that can take many forms depending on interest and personnel. A stipend is provided for work with that ensemble, and it may be team‑taught or assigned to the Choral Director or Assistant Director. Other responsibilities will include assisting with music selection, assessing students, completing administrative duties as assigned, and promoting the department to parents and the public at large. The ideal candidate will have strong collaborative piano skills, experience accompanying choral ensembles, and the ability to assist in choral rehearsal techniques and vocal pedagogy.

The program enjoys widespread community support and is highly visible through concerts. Of note is the 86‑year tradition of the Capitol Caroling, an annual Christmas concert held in the Missouri Capitol Rotunda that combines the choirs, bands, and orchestras. Chorale has an impressive history of excellence, with numerous top ratings at MSHSAA contests, consistent membership in All‑State Choir, performances at MMEA state music convention, and former graduates who have become music educators. Compensation is competitive with recent base increases and potential future additions. Stipends are also provided for the assistant role and extra‑curricular ensemble support.

To apply, please submit a letter of interest highlighting your skills and preparation as they apply to the job duties, a résumé or curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation with contact information from individuals who are familiar with your work and skill sets. Audio or video of accompanying, rehearsals, or performances may be requested at a later date.
