Planned Leadership Transition

This position is part of a structured leadership transition within the Transportation Department. Ideally, the selected candidate will begin in March 2026 and work alongside the current Director through December 2026 to learn district routes, systems, procedures, and compliance requirements.

In January 2027, the selected candidate will assume full Director responsibilities. The current Director has expressed a willingness to remain available in a support and advisory capacity during the remainder of the 2026-2027 school year to ensure continuity and a smooth transition.

Position Summary

Leads and manages all district transportation operations.

Ensures students are transported safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Indiana law.

Serves as a working director willing and able to drive a route or assist with mechanical work when needed.

Oversees drivers, routing, fleet maintenance, shop operations, and state compliance.

Oversees maintenance and operational readiness of all district vehicles and motorized equipment.

Salary to be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications

Valid Indiana CDL with School Bus and Passenger (S & P) endorsements.

Meets all Indiana State Police and IDOE school bus driver requirements.

Ability to pass required background checks and drug/alcohol screening.

Working knowledge of Indiana pupil transportation laws and inspection standards.

Ability to perform light-to-moderate mechanical work on diesel school buses and district equipment.

Strong organizational and supervisory skills.

Desirable Qualifications

Prior experience in a school district transportation department.

Prior leadership experience in transportation or fleet management.

ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications.

Diesel engine certification or comparable technical training.

Experience with routing software.

Budget oversight experience.

Primary Responsibilities Leadership & Supervision

Supervise and evaluate bus drivers and transportation staff.

Assist with hiring, training, and retention of drivers and substitutes.

Set clear expectations for safety, attendance, and professionalism.

Maintain an orderly, respectful work environment.

Hold self and staff accountable for safety, reliability, and professionalism.

Safety & Compliance

Ensure all buses pass Indiana State Police inspections.

Oversee driver certifications, physicals, and required training.

Administer drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Maintain accurate records for audits and state reporting.

Investigate accidents and implement corrective actions.

Serve as district contact with Indiana State Police.

Routing & Daily Operations

Develop and adjust bus routes for safety and efficiency.

Respond to parent and school concerns in a timely, professional manner.

Coordinate transportation for extracurricular and special education services.

Ensure compliance with IEP transportation requirements.

Monitor daily operations and address issues as they arise.

Fleet & Equipment Oversight

Oversee preventative maintenance and repair schedules for all district buses.

Oversee maintenance and service of all district-owned vehicles and motorized equipment, including vans, trucks, maintenance vehicles, mowers, snow removal equipment, and related machinery.

Assist with diagnostics and repairs when needed.

Maintain maintenance logs and service records.

Manage parts inventory and shop supplies.

Monitor fuel usage.

Develop and maintain a long-term bus and vehicle replacement plan.

Budget & Planning

Develop and manage the transportation and fleet budget.

Monitor spending and recommend cost-saving improvements.

Assist with state transportation reporting and reimbursement documentation.

Emergency Response

Coordinate transportation during delays, closures, and district emergencies.

Monitor road and weather conditions during inclement weather events.

Drive and inspect county and township roads during snow, ice, fog, flooding, or other hazardous conditions.

Conduct early-morning road checks as needed.

Make recommendations to the Superintendent regarding school delays or cancellations based on transportation safety conditions.

Maintain on-call availability outside normal work hours when needed.

Physical Requirements

Ability to operate a school bus.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work in a garage environment and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
