Athens Area Position Summary
The incumbent will be located at the JPCREC in Watkinsville, GA and will be responsible for managing many of the day-to-day operations of the JPCREC‑Watkinsville, including but not limited to managing all aspects of a 200+ head herd of beef cattle, managing all aspects of pasture and hayfield production, ensuring that the REC grounds, both at HQ and outlying locations, are well maintained and project a positive image of the CAES. The farm manager will work closely with the REC superintendent, CAES faculty, and technical staff to coordinate complex research projects and will supervise full‑time and temporary staff, maintaining detailed and accurate records of all farm‑related activities. Key Responsibilities
Manage the REC’s beef cattle herd, including vaccinations, pregnancy checking, breeding, calving, and herd maintenance, ensuring a productive cow‑calf operation for research and revenue generation. Supervise a full‑time employee and multiple part‑time/std‑worker staff in herd care and assistance with the cow‑calf operation. Coordinate bi‑annual inspections of the herd, pastures, handling facilities, and equipment with IACUC; maintain all facilities to IACUC standards. Keep detailed records of herd management activities and provide them upon request. Manage pastures, hayfields, and forage production, including soil sampling, liming, fertilization, fence maintenance, and hay harvesting for seasonal feeding programs. Schedule and execute regular harvests and baleage production, using reports to develop feeding programs during winter months. Plan and execute winter‑annual grass planting for grazing in late fall and winter, ensuring adequate forage for the herd. Use a P‑Card for necessary purchases, maintaining accurate documentation. Maintain grounds at JPCREC‑Watkinsville headquarters and outlying areas to project a positive image of the REC and CAES. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent and at least 2 years of professional experience. Effective communication and team‑building skills. Working knowledge of animal husbandry (beef cattle), sprayer/spreader calibrations, and ranch equipment typical to cattle and row‑crop farms. Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite. Physical Demands
Lift, push, and carry up to 100 pounds; work in environmental extremes and outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, and wet conditions. Operate in proximity to livestock and navigate varied schedules according to farm needs. Drive as needed to perform job duties. EEO Policy Statement
