Overview

MU Extension – Animal Health & Production Extension. Location: primarily serves the counties of Butler, Carter, Oregon, Reynolds, Ripley, and Wayne in the Southeast Region, with additional service across the state as needed. Job Title and Specialty

MU TITLE:

Assistant/Associate/Full Extension Professional Specialist Emphasis:

This position is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating educational programs in Livestock Production, including management, nutrition, reproduction, animal health, and marketing. Specialists will support the livestock industry in and around the southeast region of Missouri, collaborate with State Specialists, and work with other Field Specialists. This region includes a vibrant beef cattle industry (cow-calf and stockers). Most effort is expected to support the beef industry, including the Show-Me-Select heifer program and grazing schools. Meaningful work will also support other livestock, including small ruminants and poultry. There is a history of Extension leadership in this region and established programs the specialist could take over. Appointment Details:

This position is a 12-month, ranked, non-tenure track appointment at the rank of assistant, associate, or full Extension Professional. Rank will be determined at appointment based on qualifications and experience per MU Extension faculty standards. Working title: Field Specialist in Livestock. Workload distribution at appointment: 90% Extension Teaching and 10% Traditional Service. Appointment is renewable annually at the University’s discretion; workload distribution may change at the discretion of Extension leadership. Conditions affecting continued employment include, but are not limited to, work performance, fund availability, and educational priorities. Core Duties

Duties MU Extension Specialists deliver the University of Missouri to all Missourians by bringing research-based solutions to local problems. They teach new and foundational concepts, link people to resources, support partner organizations, participate in research, train volunteers, evaluate programs, foster innovation, and serve communities. They work as a team to expand educational attainment, foster economic development, and improve health outcomes. Core duties fall into three major areas: Educate, Create, and Connect. Educate , Create, and Connect are applied as follows: Educate: design, conduct, and evaluate educational programs; teach via meetings, in-person and online courses, continuing education, technical assistance, volunteer training, media, websites, consultation, and other methods; provide programs that support learners and clients’ goals. Create: develop innovative and research-informed products, services, materials, and other scholarly works; include curricula, publications, presentations, educational tools, websites; obtain and use extramural funding; contribute to Extension scholarship by evaluating programs leading to learning and behavior changes. Connect: engage with learners, stakeholders, volunteers, communities, county extension councils, government officials, partners, and University/professional organizations; build robust connections to programs across the University of Missouri System. Professional Expectations

Engage with stakeholders in all coverage counties to identify educational needs and collaborate with internal and external partners to meet programming needs, including timely marketing strategies. Create an annual plan-of-work reflecting local needs and statewide program area efforts. Provide monthly reports to assigned county extension councils, supervisors, county commissioners and others; attend at least one county extension council meeting per month and provide program reviews with feedback and analysis for the coverage area. Collaborate with campus-based specialists on research and deliver findings via demonstrations, field days, courses, workshops, consultations, publications, and media. Work with supervisors, other specialists, and local leaders to complete administrative tasks to support county efforts. Demonstrate competency in communication, educational programming, subject matter knowledge, educational delivery, volunteer management, grant acquisition, teamwork, interpersonal relations, organization knowledge, leadership, and professionalism. Provide timely, research-based information during natural disasters or unexpected catastrophic events. Represent the University on boards and committees for the assigned program area. Participate in professional development to improve technical and leadership skills. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support MU Extension’s mission. Additional Expectations

MU Extension Specialists travel regularly throughout Missouri and occasionally to out-of-state locations. A valid Missouri driver’s license, legally operating vehicle, and wireless phone/data service are required; travel expenses are reimbursed per University policy. Programs often occur outside normal business hours; specialists should expect to attend these events as needed to meet learners’, clients’, and stakeholders’ needs. Leadership and Information

MU Extension Leadership Received:

The Senior Program Director for Agriculture & Environment provides programmatic leadership. Programmatic supervision comes from the Education Directors for the Animal Health & Production program area, with administrative oversight from the Regional Director for the Southeast region. An earned Master’s, Ph.D., or DVM degree in animal science or closely related field with coursework demonstrating knowledge of livestock production and management at appointment. Related areas could include forage management, farm management, etc. Anticipated Hiring Range

Minimum starting salary of $58,000; salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Application Materials
