The University of Montana Blewett School of Law invites applications for the Associate Director of Public Services Librarian to be responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of the law library’s public services, including reference, faculty research support, circulation, and outreach. The role works closely with the Library Director, faculty, students, and law school staff to maintain efficient and innovative library services.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage the law library’s reference and faculty research services, including advanced legal research (legislative history, case law, statutory, regulatory, foreign, and interdisciplinary research).

Provide expert research consultations and guidance on specialized legal databases (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law, HeinOnline) and other research tools.

Develop and maintain research guides and instructional materials; collect and assess service data to support continuous improvement.

Deliver comprehensive research support for faculty scholarship, including managing dissemination through digital repositories and supervising student research assistants.

Oversee circulation and public services operations, including hiring, training, and supervising student employees and developing related policies and procedures.

Plan and implement outreach initiatives, programming, and partnerships to promote library services and enhance student and faculty engagement.

Teach general and specialized legal research courses, provide guest lectures, and deliver instructional presentations.

Engage in ongoing professional development and collaborate with colleagues on strategic planning, assessment, and service innovation.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution.

Knowledge of legal research sources, databases, and methods, and the ability to provide high-quality reference assistance.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience supervising student employees.

Knowledge of legal material and sources and research methods, and the ability to assist library patrons with reference questions.

Preferred Qualifications

Three years of experience working in a law library.

Understanding of Law School and Law Library policies and procedures.

Member of the Montana State Bar.

Master of Public Administration.

Experience working in an academic law library.

Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program.
