Position Summary The Director of Recruiting & Retention is responsible for leading the overall recruiting and retention strategy at J&R Schugel Trucking, Inc. This role oversees the Recruiting function at a strategic level, including workforce planning, advertising and marketing, budget management, and employer branding. The Director provides vision, leadership, and direction for driver recruitment and retention efforts, ensuring alignment with company goals, DOT compliance, and industry best practices.

Essential Functions

Lead and mentor the Driver Recruiting team, providing support, coaching, and professional development.

Set weekly, monthly, and annual goals for the recruiting department to achieve hiring objectives.

Collaborate with leadership (Safety, Operations, HR, and Executive team) to align staffing goals with operational needs.

Develop and execute driver retention strategies to reduce turnover and enhance driver satisfaction.

Maintain close communication with drivers, Operations Managers, and Retention Specialists to understand staffing needs and retention challenges.

Establish and track recruiting and retention metrics (e.g., cost per lead, cost per hire, scheduled vs. show-up rates, hires, compliance %).

Report on recruiting performance and workforce trends to executive leadership.

Review all prospective driver files for quality and compliance.

Oversee all driver recruiting advertising and marketing efforts.

Partner with the Marketing team to develop and manage campaigns across social media, digital, referral, and non-traditional channels (e.g., e-blasts, call blasts, drip marketing).

Enhance J&R Schugel’s employer brand by promoting the company’s values, culture, and benefits in recruitment materials and public-facing content.

Manage advertising budgets and ensure cost-effective use of resources.

Research and recommend innovative recruiting tools and methods to attract qualified CDL drivers.

Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, EEOC, FCRA, labor laws, and company policies in all recruiting and hiring practices.

Partner with HR and Safety on the administration, coordination, and evaluation of driver qualification criteria.

Oversee timely completion of new hire paperwork, reinstatements, rehires, and DQF maintenance.

Oversee new-hire travel logistics (rotating on-call, including weekends/holidays).

Negotiate rates with orientation hotels, shuttle services, and meal vendors.

Ensure a smooth transition for new drivers, providing ongoing support and addressing concerns during their initial tenure.

Work with the leadership team to establish annual budget goals tied to staffed truck count.

Monitor advertising spend and recruiting ROI to optimize resources.

Implement training modules for recruiters to ensure consistent practices and compliance.

Perform other duties as assigned or directed by senior leadership.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in business management/administration or human resources or equivalent experience in managing driver recruiting.

Experience

2 - 5 years of management experience.

Experience in the transportation industry required.

Computer Skills

Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Suite.

AS400 and Tenstreet experience strongly desired.

Internet recruiting experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to type a minimum of 35 wpm.

Able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.

Familiar with or willing to become familiar with Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA) and DOT regulations and rules as they pertain to the qualifications of driving a truck for the Company.

Solid presentation skills.

Established standard operating procedures and metrics (KPI’s).

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Strong supervisory and leadership skills.

Extensive knowledge of the principles, procedures, and best practices in the industry.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Understands the importance of strict confidentiality for all sensitive information.

Prior experience driving a Class A truck is beneficial.
