This includes exploring digital growth opportunities for the business, looking at innovative licensing models, and driving value from BBC Studios' world‑famous brands such as Doctor Who, Bluey, Top Gear, Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing With The Stars and BBC Earth. We run global businesses from live events to merchandise, music and magazine publishing. We identify opportunities for growth and future‑proof success through scaling digital business models such as social media monetisation and gaming, and conduct world‑class marketing to ensure BBC Studios brands generate fame globally.
Job Purpose Step into a pivotal role at BBC Studios where your expertise will shape the retail success of iconic brands like Bluey, Doctor Who, and BBC Earth. Drive retail relationships and innovative growth strategies to deliver ROI in retail and omnichannel accounts across US and Canadian retail channels, ensuring our brands captivate and resonate with audiences everywhere.
The Director, Retail Development will execute omnichannel retail development and marketing strategies to maximise brand presence and retailer support.
The primary focus is to expand and manage BBC Studios brands’ retail placement across mid‑tier, value‑, off‑price, grocery, drug and new business channels in the US and Canada, with opportunity to support e‑commerce.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Cultivate, nurture and grow relationships with Buyers, DMMs and Marketing Leads across key retailers.
Develop and execute brand strategies across BBC Studios’ growing portfolio of brands to increase brand visibility, product placement and sell‑through. Craft compelling, creative, customised and strategic brand presentations for retailers, including infographics, sizzles, visual graphics, competitive analysis and recaps. Communicate, educate and motivate retail buyers, management and marketing teams on BBC Studios’ brands, content, marketing initiatives and licensing partners with the goal of gaining support, brand presence and driving revenue growth.
Analyse available POS data to drive sell‑through, identify key learnings and new opportunities across US and Canadian retailers.
Execute retail marketing activations including digital and in‑store events/promotions/campaigns, costume appearances and bespoke opportunities that drive excitement, social engagement, traffic and sales.
Collaborate with internal team, licensing partners and agencies to develop meaningful, turnkey retail programmes that achieve positive ROI.
Analyse and evaluate retail and consumer trends to identify opportunities for brand/retail placement and retail marketing initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience Knowledge and Experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is a plus.
Superior writing and proofing skills, with an eye for design.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to negotiate favourable retail activations and placement.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Basic Requirements
Ten plus years of experience in Retail Development, Licensing or Category Management.
Experience managing broad range of retail distribution channels.
Solid network of retail buyers, management and marketing leads across mid‑tier, value, drug, grocery, department and off‑price channels.
Strong familiarity with licensees across all categories.
Thorough understanding of the US and Canadian retail and entertainment landscape.
Fortitude to lead and prioritise overlapping projects with tight deadlines from conception to completion.

Solid understanding of US and/or Canadian retail channels.

Compensation The anticipated annual base salary for this position is $145,000–$150,000 plus 15% bonus. This does not include other benefits that an individual may be eligible for. The actual base salary offered depends on the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licences held, and geographic location of the position.
