
MSP Pre-Sales Engineer

$45.00 per hour during the contract phase ($85 - $105,000 annually upon conversion) Location:
Hybrid in Colorado Springs, CO Our client is seeking an MSP Sales Engineer for a contract to hire scenario. The Sales Engineer focuses on pre‑sales discovery, solution design, and technical scoping to help our sales team and vCIO deliver the right solutions to clients. This role translates business requirements into secure, supportable technical designs with accurate labor estimates, standardized documentation, and clean handoffs to project delivery. The Sales Engineer may occasionally assist with implementation, migrations, or troubleshooting related to solutions they design. Reporting and Working Relationships
Reports to: Project Manager Key internal partners: Sales Team, vCIO, Tech Lead, Infrastructure Engineers, the Technical Assistance Center (TAC), and Accounting (as needed for procurement/quoting) Work intake / prioritization: Work requests and technical needs primarily come from Sales and the vCIO; the Project Manager manages workload, priorities, and execution expectations. Performance input: The Project Manager leads performance reviews and incorporates structured feedback from the Sales team and vCIO supported by this role. Outcomes and Success Measures (First 6-12 Months)
Accurate scopes and quotes: Labor estimates are typically within plus/minus 10-15% of actual labor hours after ramp, with a stretch goal of plus/minus 10%. Fewer change orders: Reduced change orders caused by incomplete discovery, scope gaps, or missing requirements. Standardized designs/templates: Improved consistency and adoption of standardized design patterns and documentation templates across project delivery. Clean project handoffs: Projects can be executed without re-discovery due to complete, clear, and actionable handoff documentation. Quote turnaround: Small quotes (defined as ?20 labor hours, no migrations, minimal discovery) delivered in 3–4 business days; larger quotes ( >20 labor hours and/or migrations, multi‑site complexity, or non‑standard designs) delivered in 5–15 business days. Client Discovery and Consultation
Work with Sales and vCIO to conduct discovery with prospective and existing clients to understand needs, pain points, constraints, and priorities. Translate business requirements into technical requirements and recommended solutions. Support sales activities including technical conversations, demos, and presentations as needed. Solution Design and Technical Standards
Design supportable solutions with an emphasis on security, standardization, and maintainability. Stay current on relevant technology changes and industry trends to provide informed recommendations to Sales and vCIO. Incorporate automation into project designs wherever feasible to improve efficiency and streamline workflows. Scoping, Estimating, and Quoting
Produce clear scopes of work including assumptions, dependencies, risks, constraints, and out‑of‑scope items. Create accurate labor estimates and support quoting, including BOM/licensing and required client inputs. Collaborate with the CEO, vCIO, Tech Lead, Project Manager, and other internal stakeholders to define scope and technology for internal initiatives when needed. Documentation and Project Handoffs
Create and maintain standardized templates for project workplans, project documentation, and design deliverables. Ensure handoffs to the Project Manager, Tech Lead, and Infrastructure Engineers are complete and actionable, including design/architecture, scope, estimates, BOM/licensing, assumptions, dependencies, risks, and required client inputs. Internal Enablement and Training
Train Infrastructure Engineers on using templates and standards for project workplans and project documentation. Train and support Infrastructure Engineers on quoting standards, required discovery inputs, common quoting pitfalls, and estimating best practices. Contribute to internal process improvements that increase consistency and delivery outcomes. Secondary / Occasional Responsibilities (Small‑Team Reality)
Assist with implementation, migration, or troubleshooting of solutions designed by this role when business needs require it. Hands‑on work is intended to support delivery and should typically be limited to 5‑8 hours per week (approximately 10‑20% of a 40‑hour week), not as the primary delivery owner. Support internal process development, documentation, and deployment as needed. Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in an MSP or comparable IT environment supporting multiple client environments, projects, and stakeholders. Proven experience performing discovery, scoping, estimating, and presenting technical solutions. Strong Microsoft 365 experience, including Entra ID, Intune, Autopilot, Defender, SharePoint, and Teams. Strong networking fundamentals and troubleshooting experience (routing/switching concepts, VLANs, firewall concepts, diagnostics). Strong documentation skills: ability to create clear scopes, assumptions, and handoff‑ready technical documentation. Strong client‑facing communication and professionalism. High attention to detail and ownership of deliverables. Collaborative mindset; works effectively across Sales, vCIO, PM, and engineering teams. Strong time management with the ability to manage multiple concurrent requests. Azure cloud experience (core services and identity/integration patterns). Scripting/programming experience and comfort with automation tooling.
