Job Summary The Financial Aid Counselor is the first point of contact for the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) in The Warren Alpert Medical School. The role is responsible for counseling students and parents about all aspects of the financial aid process and directing the activities of the office. The Counselor manages aid for all BioMed Master’s programs and reviews aid applications for the MD population to determine federal loan eligibility. The Counselor meets with students enrolled in the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) prior to medical school to determine eligibility for need-based scholarships and loans upon matriculation. The Counselor manages student appointments and all communication OFA maintains with MD students throughout the year. The Counselor manages the medical school financial aid application cycle, works with the Banner BDMS system to organize and store documents in a paperless way, and arranges financial aid workshops and events. The Counselor has a comprehensive understanding of Banner and other OFA systems as the communications specialist for medical students seeking financial aid assistance.

Responsibilities

Counsel students and parents about all aspects of the financial aid process.

Manage aid for BioMed Master’s programs and review aid applications for MD students to determine federal loan eligibility.

Meet with PLME students prior to medical school and determine eligibility for need-based scholarships and loans upon matriculation.

Manage student appointments and all communications with MD students throughout the year.

Oversee the medical school financial aid application cycle and coordinate with the Banner BDMS system to organize documents in a paperless environment.

Arrange and schedule financial aid workshops and events.

Serve as the communications contact for medical students seeking financial aid assistance.

Qualifications Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree with 1–2 years of experience, preferably in an academic environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience using computer systems and applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Federal EDE, Banner, etc.) is preferred.

Job Competencies

Effective interpersonal and strong oral and written communication skills to interact with prospective and current medical students and parents about sensitive information.

Excellent organizational ability to manage workflows, maintain meticulous records, and meet deadlines.

Detail-oriented.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Ability to make confident, independent decisions that provide prompt, high-quality service to students and other stakeholders.
