Job Overview
Position: Field Law Enforcement Officer, Katmai National Park and Preserve.
Location: King Salmon, Alaska. The park is remote; access is mainly by bush plane or boat.
Major Duty Statements
Supervise and mentor field law enforcement staff, both permanent and seasonal.
Detect, investigate, apprehend, and prosecute under applicable laws, rules, and regulations to protect national park resources.
Educate, interpret, and inform visitors about resources, conservation, laws, and regulations.
Provide training in law enforcement disciplines, both formal and informal.
Requirements
U.S. citizenship required.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
Subject to pre‑employment physical and drug testing.
Must possess a Type I or higher Law Enforcement Commission.
New employees must identify a financial institution for direct deposit within 30 days of entrance on duty.
Time‑in‑grade requirements apply to former Federal employees and those applying through the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998.
Valid driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record required; submit records from all applicable states.
Uniform and Motor Vehicle Operator’s License required; uniform allowance provided.
May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
Occupancy of government quarters may be available.
May be required to travel overnight up to 15 nights per month; must obtain a government charge card for travel.
May be required to complete training and maintain a government charge card with travel/purchase authority.
Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
Financial disclosure reporting required; Complete a new entrant Confidential Financial Disclosure Report within 30 days of appointment.
Additional Requirements (Selection Factors)
Law Enforcement Commission : Must currently possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to obtain a valid Type I or higher NPS Law Enforcement Commission by the closing date.
Secondary Law Enforcement Position : This is a covered secondary law enforcement position. Applicants must possess experience in a primary law enforcement position.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS/GL‑11 grade level. Experience must include:
Managing or leading law enforcement and resource protection program.
Evaluating law enforcement program activities, determining objectives, and allocating resources.
Interpreting regulations, policy directives related to law enforcement and natural resource protection.
Reviewing law enforcement case reports for compliance with policy, agreements, and memoranda of understanding.
Investigating criminal activity, conducting investigations of applicable Federal or state laws, and performing training/instructor responsibilities.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions Work includes long periods of standing, hiking, climbing on uneven, steep, and rugged terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, and emergency medical situations. Lifting or carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds is required. The work may involve pursuit and physical apprehension of dangerous suspects; work outside in all weather conditions; shift work; and extensive travel by government aircraft and vessels. Frequent exposure to high‑risk situations, extreme arctic weather, and hazardous wildlife is expected.
