Overview
The Associate Director of Development is a frontline fundraiser responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects. The role identifies, engages, and solicits donors at all life stages, including prospect research, development of solicitation strategies, and stewardship throughout the major giving process. The position typically maintains a donor portfolio focused on gifts of $50,000 or above. The role may require frequent travel and meetings on and off campus during regular and non-traditional business hours and operates with a high level of autonomy.
About the team and location The Kimmel Cancer Center Development Team is hiring two Associate Directors to partner with physicians, clinical leadership, and development colleagues to engage patients in philanthropic contributions. The Associate Directors will be based at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC focusing on patients of the Sibley Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Greater Washington Area. One role will focus primarily on Neuro Oncology, Cancer Disparities Initiatives, and the Center for Patient and Family Services; the other role will focus on Lung Cancer, Melanoma, Palliative Care, and General Cancer Research.
Responsibilities
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a prospect pool for new and existing annual and major gifts.
Design and implement development strategies to build a portfolio, involving relevant colleagues where necessary.
Determine annual work plan goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
Track fundraising activity in the CRM.
Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts.
Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials for prospects and donors that articulate Johns Hopkins University's needs, values, and ambitions.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of department or division mission, history, teaching, research, and/or clinical programs to effectively communicate funding opportunities; refresh knowledge of school/divisional/departmental partnerships, priorities, and shared goals.
Proactively communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
Complete in-person and virtual donor visits each fiscal year. Goals for visits and other KPIs will be set by school/division/business unit leadership.
Develop and participate in implementing annual stewardship plans for donors.
Develop and maintain strong, trust-based partnerships with colleagues across the institution.
Work with faculty and institutional leaders to engage them as fundraising partners in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors. Staff, train, and guide internal stakeholders through the development process.
Partner with team members on the planning and execution of development-related activities for the department, including professorship dedications, lectureships, and other stewardship events.
Participate in team-wide activities, meetings, events, and knowledge-sharing.
Represent the school/division on committees and at institution-wide programming where appropriate.
Analyze data at a high level, identify prospects, demonstrate activity, and track progress toward work plan goals.
Participate in special projects, programs, initiatives as assigned.
Other duties as assigned.
Additional duties
Manage a portfolio of faculty and clinical staff in the grateful patient fundraising space embedded within the Cancer Service Line Fundraising Team (CSLFT) based at Sibley Memorial Hospital.
Collaborate closely with faculty and clinical staff in assigned service lines to proactively identify, engage, and cultivate grateful patient philanthropic opportunities in alignment with institutional priorities.
Maintain a portfolio of approximately 120 annual and major gift donors and prospects in assigned service lines through cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, including written and verbal communication and personal donor visits.
Develop a comprehensive understanding of the priorities of the faculty and Hospital in assigned cancer service lines to represent these needs internally and externally. Articulate the need for support for unrestricted funds and priority needs within these areas.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
