Director of Communications and Outreach (Municipal Government)

Mediabistro, Schaumburg, IL, United States

A full-service municipality of nearly 79,000 residents located 28 miles northwest of Chicago is hiring a Director of Communications and Outreach to lead the village's communications operations. This is a department head role, appointed by and reporting directly to the Village Manager, with oversight of a team that includes a Communications Specialist, Web and Multimedia Specialist, a part‑time Video Producer/Editor, and a part‑time Video Technician. The department also works with contracted support for web coordination and graphic design on special projects.

The Director is responsible for all village communications, ensuring alignment with the municipality's mission, branding, policies, and strategic goals. A formal village-wide strategic communications plan is already in place to guide the work. Day to day, that means everything from setting social media strategy and crafting messaging across multiple channels to collaborating with department heads and maintaining consistency in how the village presents itself to residents, businesses, and media.

This is a strong fit for a communications leader with government or public‑sector experience who is comfortable managing a small team, working in a highly transparent environment, and balancing strategic planning with hands‑on content work.
