Publishers Weekly is hiring: Business Editor and Reporter in New York

Publishers Weekly, New York, NY, United States

Publishers Weekly is looking for a Business Editor and Reporter.

About the Team The Business editor and reporter will join the team that helms PW’s The Daily—a Monday–Friday newsletter with stories about the publishing industry. The team handles all online news and larger stories, as well as some weekly work for the print magazine.

About the Role PW seeks an experienced Business editor and reporter to join the news team and report on the business side of the publishing industry. This includes producing online and print articles covering sales, profits, business mergers, and more. The role requires identifying industry trends for larger stories and strong understanding of business fundamentals and company earnings statements. Excellent writing skills are essential, as is the ability to produce daily stories while juggling longer‑lead assignments. A willingness to pitch in on edits outside the business beat is also imperative.

This position is located in New York City with a hybrid in‑person/remote workplace.

Responsibilities

Accurately write and report engaging news articles daily, both pitched and assigned, about the publishing business from financial reporting, mergers and acquisitions, job moves, program launches, IPOs, reorgs, book sales, tech, and more.

Keep up‑to‑date on publishing industry news to identify trends and make industry contacts for news scoops and exclusives.

Work with PW’s news director to define goals and priorities and collaborate closely with the news team on The Daily and the weekly magazine.

Represent the brand in a public‑facing way at press opportunities, panels, and speaking engagements.

How to Apply Interested candidates should submit a résumé, cover letter, and 3–5 clips to hr@publishersweekly.com, using "Business Editor and Reporter" in the subject line.

Desired Qualifications

At least 3–4 years of experience as an editor in a fast‑paced, digital, news‑driven environment.

Portfolio of business writing with a record of breaking news, preferably in the publishing world.

Excellent editing and writing skills, accuracy, and news judgment.

Strong understanding of business fundamentals.

Tech savvy and interested in how tech impacts publishing.

Experience balancing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.

Inquisitive nature and willingness to build contacts in the publishing industry.

Comfort with a morning‑heavy schedule for The Daily (8:30–11:30 a.m.) and flexible afternoons for other projects.

Interest in books, literature, and reading.
