Primary Purpose Direct and manage the district's extracurricular athletic programs and instructional PE/athletics programs. Instruct and coach students to develop skills and abilities to excel in athletics, provide each student with the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all federal, state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and local requirements.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (Master's preferred)
Valid Texas teaching certificate (Mid Management preferred)
Current first aid, CPR, and AED certificate
Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements (preferred)
Knowledge of operations of an athletic program, coaching techniques, federal/state/UIL policies
Ability to instruct and supervise coaches and student athletes
Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical if bus driving duties required
Ability to implement policy and procedures, interpret data, manage budget and personnel
Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, and staff
5 years of successful teaching and coaching experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties Athletics/PE/Cheer Program Planning and Instruction
Establish performance criteria for competition and manage athletic activities, cheer, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth, teamwork, and good sportsmanship
Maintain an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development, including time, resources, and materials to support department goals
Establish and maintain physical and academic eligibility requirements and verify each athlete's eligibility
Use a variety of instructional and coaching techniques to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes
Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities
Be part of the instructional management team to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives for overall educational development of student athletics
Obtain, use, and submit evaluative findings (including student achievement data - FITNESSGRAM) to gauge program effectiveness
Athletic Events
Coordinate athletic events with other departments/contractors, including online ticket sales, employing game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities
Organize and submit event expense documentation to the business department
Be part of the administrator event duty rotation
Prepare and approve all interscholastic game schedules
Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town athletic events
Coordinate use of all athletic facilities and rentals
Plan, organize, and oversee all athletic award and special programs
Student Management
Implement district student management policies, communicate expected behavior, enforce discipline per student code of conduct
Maintain and revise district athletic handbook
Accompany and supervise student athletes during games and out-of-town trips
Instruct and advise students on NCAA regulations regarding academic requirements for scholarships and recruiting practices
Maintain an active program and manage resources to support department goals
Obtain and use evaluative findings to gauge program effectiveness
Communication
Establish and maintain open lines of communication with administrators, parents, students, and teachers
Administration, Budget, and Inventory
Implement policies established by federal law, state law, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and local board policy
Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures
Compile, maintain, and file all required reports, records, and documents
Develop and administer budget based on documented needs and ensure cost-effective operations
Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing athletic equipment; maintain inventory and recommend disposal and replacement
Coordinate use of athletic facilities by non‑school groups
Plan, organize, and oversee all activities, including practices, special events, and tournaments
Maintain professional conduct
Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions for the athletic department
Recruit, select, train, supervise, evaluate departmental personnel; recommend hiring, transfers, retention, discipline, dismissal
Develop training options or improvement plans for employees
Community Relations
Articulate district mission and goals in athletics to community and solicit support
Demonstrate awareness of district and community needs; initiate activities to meet needs
Support athletic booster club activities
Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise, evaluate, and recommend hiring of coaches and support staff.
Mental, Physical, and Environmental Factors Tools/Equipment: Athletic equipment, standard office equipment, AED; frequent driving (may operate school bus). Posture: sitting; prolonged standing; occasional kneeling. Motion: frequent walking; repetitive hand motions; keyboarding/mouse; moderate grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension, reaching. Lifting: frequently light (≤15 lbs); occasional moderate (15-44 lbs). Environment: frequent travel. Mental demands: maintain emotional control under stress; frequent prolonged irregular hours.
