
Structural Estimator

Job Requirements
The Steel Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects. This role requires strong technical ability, solid understanding of drawings and fabrication processes, and the capacity to manage estimates with moderate independence. The estimator will collaborate with engineering, detailing, project management, and vendors to ensure bids are complete, feasible, and aligned with company standards.

Key Responsibilities
Daily Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents
Perform material takeoffs and quantity calculations with minimal oversight
Prepare estimate worksheets, pricing summaries, and supporting documentation
Communicate with vendors and suppliers to obtain pricing
Identify scope gaps, missing information, and constructability considerations
Coordinate with detailing and project management teams to validate design assumptions
Weekly: Participate in internal bid review meetings
Update bid calendars, estimating logs, and pipeline reports
Collaborate with project management to understand production capacity and schedule impacts
Support entry level estimators by reviewing takeoffs or answering technical questions
Monthly: Conduct post bid reviews to evaluate estimate accuracy and identify improvement opportunities
Update cost databases, labor rates, and historical pricing references
Strengthen vendor and subcontractor relationships through consistent communication
Quarterly: Participate in process improvement initiatives and template refinements
Analyze steel market trends, pricing fluctuations, and competitive landscape
Contribute to cross functional planning with engineering, operations, and leadership
Annually: Support annual budgeting and forecasting by providing historical cost data
Participate in performance and development planning
Contribute to strategic estimating initiatives and long term team goals
Specialized Knowledge & Skills
Proficiency in structural steel estimating, including takeoffs, pricing, and bid preparation
Strong ability to interpret structural drawings, connection details, and specifications
Understanding of steel fabrication processes, erection methods, coatings, and industry standards
Familiarity with AISC codes and best practices
Experience with estimating software (Tekla EPM, FabSuite/Strumis, Bluebeam)
Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem‑solving skills
Effective communication and collaboration across departments
High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field preferred
25 years of experience in structural steel estimating, fabrication, or construction
Experience preparing estimates for commercial, industrial, or institutional projects
Hands‑on fabrication, detailing, or field experience is a plus
Strategic & Cross‑Functional skills: ability to work closely with engineering, detailing, project management, and production
Vendor and subcontractor relationship management
Continuous improvement mindset
Ability to support and mentor junior estimators
Strong organizational and planning skills
