Assistant Director - Band (2026-2027 School Year)
Location: Katy ISD Cinco Ranch Junior High, Katy, Texas.
Position Type: Full‑Time (Exempt). Salary: Teacher Salary + Stipend.
Pay Grade: I00. Duty Period: 187 Days. Starting Date: Immediately.
Primary Purpose Assist in directing and managing the overall band program for the campus and district. Provide students with opportunities to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with state, UIL, TMEA, and district requirements. Plan and instruct band activities aligned with campus and district expectations and pursue recognition opportunities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
Valid Texas teaching certificate.
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program.
Ability to manage budget and personnel.
Knowledge of state, UIL and TMEA policies governing band activities.
Ability to interpret policy, procedures and data.
Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Direct junior high school instrumental performers, including beginning classes, large band ensembles, soloists and small ensembles.
Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
Provide band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts and UIL/TMEA activities.
Arrange transportation for all off‑campus events.
Comply with federal, state and local laws; State Board of Education rules; UIL and TMEA rules; and local school board policy in the band area.
Support band booster club activities, if applicable.
Use evaluative findings and student achievement data to evaluate program effectiveness and to ensure continuous improvement.
Recommend policies to improve program.
Ensure programs are cost‑effective and funds are managed wisely.
Attend all professional and staff meetings as requested.
Assist in compiling budgets and cost estimates.
Co‑ordinate fundraising activities and management of funds.
Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all band equipment and performance apparel.
Develop and implement plans for the band program and provide written evidence of preparation as required.
Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
Present subject matter according to Texas Education Agency guidelines, board policies, and administrative regulations including the Katy ISD curriculum through use of the Forethought program.
Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that address students’ learning styles and needs.
Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Apply and enforce discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, handbook and band handbook.
Accompany and supervise students on all trips.
Take precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Maintain open communication with parents, students, principals and teachers through conferences.
Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, evaluation and retention of band members.
Increase campus, district and community awareness of band activities and performances.
Provide supervisory leadership and management to all component groups within the band program.
Assist with “cluster” high school band programs when requested.
Participate in district music events and representative performances as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Individual section teaching responsibilities.
Performance ensemble rehearsals and performances.
Recruit and supervise campus private lesson program instructors.
Monitor and supervise campus private lesson program.
Monitor and advise booster organization activities.
Equipment Used Personal computer, copier, printer and fax machine.
Working Conditions Maintain emotional control under stress. May require moderate lifting. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
