
Police Property Specialist I/II - Police Department

Position Duties The SJPD is seeking an individual with experience in inventory control or warehousing to work in our Central Supply Unit or the Property and Evidence Facility. This is an entry‑level position in the Police Property Specialist job classification series.
Central Supply Unit Central Supply is responsible for receiving evidence, maintaining the chain of evidence, and processing property with accuracy to meet department guidelines. Staff will verify, confirm, and correct all entries in the database, dispose of and/or return property to rightful owners per applicable Federal, State, and City codes and ordinances, and distribute and collect Police Officer safety equipment. The unit is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, including holidays. Successful candidates must be flexible and may be assigned to midnight, swing, or day shift, with any two consecutive days off. Staff may also be subject to mandatory holdovers.
Property and Evidence Facility The Property and Evidence Facility processes, performs data entry, stores, and disposes of all property booked in by San José Police officers. All property is handled in accordance with Federal, State, and City codes and ordinances and the SJPD Duty Manual.
Duties
Ensure property received matches the Police Officer’s description on property reports and that evidence entered into the database has proper chain of custody.
Safeguard evidence with proper storage techniques, preventing damage or alteration and ensuring accessibility for court.
Retain property until the case is closed, then return it to its rightful owner or destroy as appropriate (contraband).
Issue and replace Police Officer safety equipment and maintain accurate inventory records.
Assist in training new officers in evidence packaging techniques and updated procedures.
Answer inquiries by telephone or in person from the public, law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and court personnel regarding the status of property and evidence in case files.
Operate vehicle(s) to transport evidence between storage and Crime Lab for analysis; may be asked to testify in court regarding chain‑of‑evidence records.
Minimum Qualifications Police Property Specialist I: Graduation from high school or equivalent and one (1) year performing inventory control and records maintenance duties.
Police Property Specialist II: Graduation from high school and two (2) years of experience receiving, storing, and disposing of evidence and property in a law‑enforcement environment. No substitution of additional education for required experience.
Required Licensing Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Special Requirements Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation.
